thank you very much to everybody for your useful suggestions that I will consider for my trip.

none of you talked about ANDAMAN, is there any reason for that?, I mean, Port Blair should be easy to be reached from Chennai, isn't it? and the sea should be really great.
Does anybody know any information about the transport system there? are boat trips easy to be arranged? and how long does it take to go to Long Island or Mayabunder from Port blair? Since I have about 5 days to spend at seaside I wonder if Andaman could be feasable...

Yhank yoou again mates,

I can recommend Ganpatipule about 400kms south of Mumbai- take the overnight bus from Mumbai or train to Rarnagiri then bus.
It's mobbed during the Ganapati (Ganesh) festival but quiet at other times.
some info

Any other visitors will be Indians from Mumbai.
Excellent beaches - no banana pancakes.

thank you guys for your help,
just for your information, I tried to have look to flights fares from chennai to Port Blair: 355 Euro is the lowest fare offered by Jet airways... actually too high for my budget so... I am going to look for other destinations you all suggested ...
I'll let you know...

Just another thought. If you don't want to travel too far south then there is Cherai Beach near Kochi (40 minute taxi ride from Kochi). Plenty of cheapish accommodation. Went there last January and found accommodaton right on the beach - didn't book just arrived and asked around. Very quiet especially during the week. The water and beach were clean. Swam with dolphins that come right up to the shore. Some cheap restaurants with basic but reasonable food.

Have you checked with Air Deccan for Chennai - Port Blair, which is supposed to be the lowest cost operator on the route. You should get tickets in the range of Rs. 3000 - Rs. 5000 one way.

Andaman is an excellent place. You can spent 1 - 2 days in Port Blair & 3 days at Havelock Islands.

Yes they are veryyy expensive, but quite luxurious

We stayed at Taj Green Cove Resort in Kovalam
There is also the new Leela Kovalam...looks amazing in the tripadvisor.com pictures..both close to 200 dollars a night

I was suggesting on another thread about Varkala...looks way less commercial. And very unspoiled..wish to go next year!
