Road to Rishikesh?

We're off to Rishikesh this coming weekend for a spot of white water rafting. We're going to be driving on our own.

Just wanted to check if anyone has been to Rishikesh from Delhi recently by road. Can you let me know how the road condition and traffic is? Any trouble spots on the way? Also, what would be the best time to start from Delhi?

I think the route via BahalGarh(Sonepat) and Baghpat is also good.

Go via Singhu Border, turn right at Bahalgarh chowk and cross yamuna, go via Baghpat. We went via this route 3 months back and it was ok

Road is good/decent.
Weekends traffic is heavier.

Route is Ghaziabad/Merrut/Muzaffarnagar/Roorkee/Haridwar

Distance about 260km

I would start early to avoid city traffic.

Except for areas where the 'gates' open for one way traffic, and areas where permits are required, none. Then there are areas like the Binsar sancturay, where they have been occasional strikes resulting in entry banned. Happened to me once.

I wouldnt recommend night driving, btw.

It would help if you indicated areas so members can respond.

Stop Press!

All references in any thread to the one-way system between Kalsi and Chakrata are now invalid.

It has been withdrawn w.e.f. 26 Jan '08. Traffic is free to move in both directions, at any time of day or night.

I may also add that the road Chakrata-Tiuni is not in as bad condition as reported here and there. I got as far as Koti-Kanasar only (30 km), but there are daily buses plying between the two places. There are a few bad spots, and on the whole the road is not in great condition, but I've seen far worse. And it's almost traffic-free so driving it is quite a pleasant experience, aided by the lush green surroundings.

There is a ban on night-driving (8 pm to 5 am), specially in the yatra season, on routes like Rishikesh(Lakhshmanjhula)-Shrinagar-Karnprayag-Joshimath. I read in another thread it's supposed to be on the Rishikesh-Gangotri route as well, but I've never heard of it anywhere else or on my travels, so cannot vouch for it.

But to echo the Capt - avoid driving at night.

Delhi - Dehradun Road Condition.

Can someone give me a recent update on the road condition between Delhi and Dehradun.

I havent been in a while now and am contemplating a weekend trip. I know as per distance it is doable in 4 hours , but i am also painfully aware of how bad the road conditions can be...dont want to end up driving for 6-7 hours.

Main highway is in bad shape due to road widening and with heavy traffic. I’ll suggest you not to take NH-58, you will end up driving for 7-8 hours.
There is an alternate route. After driving approx 10 KMs from Mohannagar, you will come across gangnahar bridge (Landmark Gangnahar Hotel on right), take the left road going along side the gangnahar. This is a single lane road with less traffic and you can easily maintain speed of 60-70, but need to be a bit careful while driving. By this road Khatuli is 70 KMs (you can have your first halt there) and Khatuli to Roorkee is 74 KMs. From Roorkee take regular highway to Dehardun.

Happy Travelling

Start point of this route to Roorkee will take around 3 hours (including a 15-20 min break) and then from Roorkee to Dehradun will take another 1-1.30 Hour.
