Road Manali - Leh - End of May

Hello,

does anyone know if the road from Manali to Leh will be opened at the end of May (around May 28)?

I have heard a lot between end of April - early July and I just want to know your experiences. (e.g. if state transport busses haven't start plying, do others? what about private transport?)

How can I go there at the end of May - I want to avoid flying.

Any suggestions for a three week tour between May 27 and June 16 which should include the following destinations:

- Delhi (start and end)
- Shimla (wouldn't it be nice by train?)
- Dharamsala/McLeod Ganj
- Leh/Ladakh
- what else?

As said, I want to avoid flying. I am travelling alone (at least at the beginning).

Thanks everyone,
Daniel

End of May might be possible this year, if there is no heavy snowfall at that time, but it is all dependent on weather. For more information contact Antrek.

Since you want to visit Shimla and Mcleodgunj as well, my suggestion would be to visit Shimla at the starting of your tour; you can take a train or an overnight bus from Delhi or you can take a bus to Kalka and take the toy train from there.

After spending few days in Shimla, you can either take a bus or a taxi to Manali and from there you should be able to get a bus or taxi to ladakh if the roads are open.

Come back by the Srinagar route and from either Srinagar or Pathankot you can take a bus/taxi to Dharamshala/Mcleodgunj.

May 27 : Take the Volvo To Shimla
May 28,29 : Around Shimla
May 30 : Take a state transport bus to McLeodganj
May 31,June 1 : Explore,trek etc
June 2 :Bus to Manali
Now you got 15days in hand for Manali-Leh-Srinagar-Delhi.
If you wish to Explore Manali, say for 2 days, do it.
Leave on 5th June for Leh, you should be there by the 8th. I say, explore Leh casually and take a flight from Leh to Delhi (saves you 5-6days coming back)

I am going to be traveling in India as well from May 26 - June 14. I am studying in Hyderabad through my University until May 25 and will leave from there Saturday May 26. I was planning a very similar trip to yours. I "friended" you on this website and was hoping to hear more about your travel plans.

Hey

Sounds great. I am travelling alone as well. I am going to be taking bus from Delhi to Leh and ultimately flying (to save time) from Leh back to Delhi. Similar to your plans, I want my journey from Delhi to Leh to incorporate a few other stops a long the way - I don't just want to go direct through Manali but rather stop off in a few places such as Dharamsala, McLeod Ganj, etc. I am also very drawn to Kinnaur/Spiti Valley, etc.

How are you booking the buses? Do you plan to book in advance? What are your latest travel plans?

Contact me by e-mail if you want as ashmorew @ wharton . upenn . edu

here is the news about opening of manali-leh highway:
Manali-Leh highway to open in May

Manali, March 31 : The key highway connecting Manali in Himachal Pradesh and Leh in Jammu and Kashmir will be opened in May, after heavy snowfall in the region forced its closure.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), which looks after the upkeep of the 480-km-long Manali-Leh highway, said it would open in mid-May instead of April as heavy snow has piled up on the winding road.

Three teams, armed with latest snow-clearing machinery, have started clearing the snow at three different places.

"Our target is to clear the snow by May 15 and throw it open for regular traffic by May 20," said Jaswant Sinha, a BRO official here.

The 13,050-feet-high Rohtang pass, 55 km from here, is currently under 20-25 feet of snow accumulated over the past few weeks.

The Kullu Valley, which went dry during much of this winter, experienced heavy spells of snowfall in March, much to the relief of the tourism industry and farmers.

There are only two roads leading to the landlocked Ladakh region: the Srinagar-Leh road, which runs close to the Line of Control (LoC), and the Manali-Leh road.

Hey,

I'm flying to New Delhi 25 of may. Going to stay in Delhi 2 or 3 days just to chill and checkout the town.

Going to take the train to Kalka and the ' toy ' train to Shimla.

After Shimla i don't know what to do! But company is always fun.

One thing i been thinking about is what kind of cloths to wear... I like my shorts and t-shirt and maybe jeans and a hoodie at night. Maybe it's colder then that up in the mountains.

But i think it's like steaming in New Delhi...

Keep in touch...

Shanti Shanti...
