It is possible to drive upto the base of Kailash and the shores of Manasarovar if you go via Nepal. There exists a rough road, similar to the one you travelled on in Kinnaur/Spiti. Land Cruisers and other 4WD vehicles carry pilgrims regularly from June to September. If you get the necessary permissions from the Chinese embassy in Kathmandu, you should have no problem.

guys...this is awesome amount of info that I am getting..so it is certainly a difficult task but can be done...:-) please keep the info flowing as i am also scouting the net to find more info...its definitely in the plan ahead (probably for next year) to go as far as possible towards kailash mansarovar....
i also found a map for the delhi-kailash route that states that there is motorable road till a place called Gala, beyond which there is a trekking route...i also heard that the possibility of accessing Kailash/mansarovar lake is higher through nepal... this is the url with the map http://www.kmyatra.org/the-route.htm |

hmmm...i have no clue...but i guess that till Gala is India since I heard someone say that its the last village on Indian border. Post that, I am thinking its all Nepal(simply by the name of the places..!!)..i am still in the process of finding out which part comes in China...oh btw, is there an approach through Tibet as well..??

Gala is not the last village. Officially Gunji, about 40 kms from Gala is the last village. But during Kailash Yatra season, few temporary locations come up till Kalapani for the porters and ponywalas to stay, while the yatris stay in KMVN tents.

You are welcome G. Vasanth.
Even visiting till OM parvat (Indian Side) would be an enriching experience. From Dharchula, it is about 4-days trek each way. Add a day at Gunji for acclimitization. The KMVN trek to Adi Kailash covers that. Try it if you could. Good Luck. |
