Recommendations for end of April/may
I'm planning a trip overseas for my birthday and India is calling me again
I've never been to India this time of year so would love some advice on where would be a good place to visit. I'd like to spend sometime on the coast but I understand that the weather can be unbearable. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.Last edited by larry76 : Mar 17th, 2008 at 21:53. Hi, and welcome to IndiaMike.
To get your better answers, try this thread: How to get the most out of the Itinerary section. The above is far too general if you ask me, and that's not even meant to be cranky. There are good people with good answers here, but they need something to go on. Alternatively, just browsing around the site some should give you more tips than you can handle. As a general piece of advice, the mountains would obviously seem your better bet -- leaving aside considerations of rain and fog and stuff for the moment, I don't know those areas well. For a general idea of the weather, try this whole thread: India climate chart

Coastal areas are at their muggiest worst in Apr / May unless you want to enjoy the mornings and evenings and snooze through the afternoons - not an unpleasant thought. Hill stations are chock full of school and college kids on vacation. Try Periyar Wildlife sanctuary which is at an elevation so always pleasant, and excellent for wildlife sightings and jungle walks. Its also one of the few sanctuaries open during summer. You will not get many tourists on the jungle walks, though undoubtedly they will be there in hordes for the boat rides. Since you prefer the coast, take a trip to the Lakshadweep islands for pure white coral sand beaches and fantastic underwater life - excellent diving / snorkelling, just relaxing on the beach. It is very hot and humid there but also very pristine and beautiful. After about 20 May, the pre monsoon turbidity sets in.

Hi and welcome to IM. As Machadinha said - try having a look as some of the threads first to see if there is anything that grabs you. India is humungous - and sort of like several different countries/ cultures/ environments/ etc rolled into one. So the good part is that there is no shortage of choice. The hard part....where to start! Thankfully there is a ton of useful information on this site - and plenty of people who can give advice onces you've narrowed it down a bit.
Happy reading. ![]() |
