Re-entry within 2 months into - after 2 days in Kathmandu

We are traveling to India late October for 15 days- during our visit we are going to Kathmandu. We have been advised to do this in the middle of our visit to India- because there is an easy flight from Varanasi to Kathmandu.

However I remember reading that it is difficult to re-enter India even on a mutli entry tourist visa issued in the USA- within 2 months. Will we have a problem..should we just do Kathmandu at the end- so we simply fly from Kathmandu to Delhi change planes and home- instead of HOPING we will be let back in after visiting Kathmandu??
Thank you in advance for any information!

As I understand it, you will not be able to get back in after two days in Kathmandu. Hence, you'd better do it at the end – and then only if you can confirm that you can transit through the airport with no problem.

We have a friend, a fellow IM'er, who had to do handstands and distribute a certain number of considerations to be able to return to India in less than the allotted time, and then only because she had some especially savvy Indian helpers on the case.

The rule only applies if you have longer than a 6 month tourist visa such as a 5 or 10 year and go back home then return in less than 2 months. You are able to go to "neighboring countries" just provide an itinerary and you will be fine.

Help

Thank you both- but notice you BOTH give opposing answers. India seems to be so difficult..I cannot seem to get a straight answer from anyone about anything...It is so frustrating...

I asked the Indian consulate before I went. You can call them or call travisa and I have travled to Nepal and Sri Lanka both with no troubles. When the new rules came out no one was really imformed in detail customs have now had enough time understand them I think they got it. If you do not hold longer than 6 month visa you are clear of any troubles anyway. You keep searching you will find all sorts of info on both sides most the ones I found were old. I am a risk taker and I went anyway and no one batted an eye. I gave them my papers then my passport. Good luck

btw when will you be going? I am also going in Oct. This time permanently

Saffron - "India seems to be so difficult . . . I cannot seem to get a straight answer from anyone about anything . . . it is so frustrating . . . " Pretty much sums India up . . . Good to get a taste of it before you arrive.

I'd suggest doing Kathmandu at the end of your trip. Just to be sure.

Other Requirements:

Indian visas allow multiple entries into the country, however, there must be a gap of at least 2 months between two visits to the country on a Tourist Visa or the traveler must have a re-entry permit. No re-entry permit is needed if the visa holder is traveling to multiple countries on the same itinerary and the trip follows the itinerary exactly. In this case the visa holder must carry a copy of the itinerary to show the Immigration Officer. All other applicants seeking permission to enter India multiple times within two months must apply for a re-entry permit by submitting the following:

Letter of Request: A letter addressed to the appropriate Indian Consulate seeking permission and highlighting the urgency of the visit. The letter should also provide a detailed explanation of the reason for visiting more than once within two months, the purpose of journey and the expected dates of travel. The specific purpose of visit must be clearly indicated, for example: for recreation/sight seeing, casual visit to meet friends and relatives/others (to be specified), and not for engagement in business activities, employment or pursuing studies, research, etc.

Re-Entry Exemption Form: Completed and signed by the applicant.

Fee: The Indian Consulate charges an additional fee of $25 with all re-entry requests. This fee is non-refundable even when re-entry permission is not granted.
And, you could apply for the re-entry permit, just to be sure. No one would be in any doubt of your intentions.
