Which is the fort/palace in Rajasthan that has the room that immitates the night sky? Anyone remember, I've been trying to find it online again, but can't. I think it may have been in Jodhpur, but it was definitely Rajasthan.

If I were you , I would try and get information on the water levels in the Pushkar lake before committing too many days there. I saw a program on TV a forthnight back and the tank looked almost completely bone dry but for a few puddles here and there where the devotees were crowding around. There has been a pick up of monsoon activity of late and the water level in the lake might have improved tho.

ADD:
Results of some google research on your behalf :
Link to a blog of a traveller with Photos of the bone dry Pushkar Lake as of 29 August. Be careful while planning.

My apologies.
Well Andy, apologies for my rant as well ( but after giving the same reply on this site to the same question, it gets a bit exasperating after the first 5-6 times ) and your sarcasm is well taken but you will eventually thank me if you do happen to visit Udaipur eventually .

Hi I was in Udaipur on 22ng Aug. The lakes were not as dry as being suggested. They are not full up to the brim but there was water. It has rained since then so situation may be better.

Lake at Pushkar was bone dry.

MatthewMorris - it was ten years ago when I saw the night sky room, but it is such a vague memory! Was it Bikaner, Hawa Mahal, Udaipur, or Amber Fort palace? I hope someone can enlighten us because I would like to know too! I'm sure it wasn't Jodhpur Fort.

It's not in Bikaner as I've never been there. Pretty sure it wasn't Udaipur either.

Rajasthan is a place you are gonna fall in luv wid, however I would recommend you few must see places in Rajasthan coz of their diversity:

1>Agra-Taj Mahal
2>Jaisalmer-Desert stay(highly recommended)
3>Jodhpur (Mehrangarh Fort & Umaid Bhawan Palce)
Mehrangarh is the largest & finest of Forts,so u may skip Jaipur, coz it mite appear a bit monotonous)
4>Udaipur-city of lakes(city palce, lakes, horse riding activities & above all a diversified look of Rajasthan,a lil different from previous ones)

My point is u can opt 1 among Jodhpur or Jaipur coz they have more or less same things to offer, but u must go for Udaipur, coz of its distinct geographical location, surrounded by a chain of mountains with beautiful lakes, rooftop restaurants etc.)

If u r very keen on Jaipur you can straight away go to Jaipur after Taj & do some evening shopping, have dinner at copperchimney restro & stay at Hotel Diggi Palace & start early next day for Jaisalmer.

Must eat:Pyaz ki kachori,Mawa Kachori,Laal Maas(mutton cooked in red chillies),Lassi in jodhpur

POINT HERE IS:Udaipur-The Venice of east shall not be missed or in d words of Kipling "No trip to India is complete without being to Udaipur"

Thanks!

I recently read about the Udaipur lake going dry. Not quite the Venice I know.

On another note, what is this Indian fascination about being a certain something of East?

Udaipur is the 'Venice' of East.

Shillong is the 'Scotland' of East.

Pune is the 'Oxford' of East.

I am sure I have missed a few more, but I hate to see these comparisons. India is nothing like anywhere else in the world. It is unique, lets keep it that way.

Have you even read the earlier posts on this thread ? The OP has cancelled his trip to Udaipur because he thought Lake Pichola was dry which it ISN'T and people here are trying to convince him to visit the place. No need to cause confusion by making smart alec comments based on outdated information.

Well i guess you are greatly deviating from the quintessence presently.Rightly said by Amalfi we are just trying to present this point that Udaipur is a must visit place in India.
It is universally of no sole importance that is Lake Pichola dry or not, though its not.Coz Udaipur is not only bout that,if it had been,we hav got lakes in other parts of the country as well.
Secondly it is called Venice of east coz it does not comprises of only one water body, instead nearby it has got 2 huge lakes Lakes Rajasmand & the second largest man made lake in Asia JAISAMAND also known as Dhebar- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhebar_Lake.
Also has Fatehsagar lake,Udaisagar lake,Swaroop Sagar and more.
http://udaipur.nic.in/lake.htm

Interestingly we all do not go to Udaipur to take a dip in Lake Pichola friends So lets not concentrate on d dryness of a lake.

And now India is not being compared wid anyplace, but in fact just to let strangers, a vague idea bout any place these things like Venice of East etc are said,so that in 1st go u at least know that this place must have to to do with water body.

Hence keeping the spirit of Udaipur & this thread alive, again I would say that anyone coming to Rajasthan must not miss this exquisite place known as Udaipur...........

Moderator Note:
Please do not use SMS on IndiaMike. The language of the Forum is English. That means "you" instead of "u"; "about" instead of "bout"; "the" instead of "d"; "because" instead of "coz". I think you get my drift. We have members from all over the world and of all nationalities, not all of whom have English as their mother tongue. For that reason we prefer full English. Thanks.

Take it easy!

How many places in ten days!
India has another time dimension, why you want to rush in it?
No way to see so many places and come back home overwhemly empty.

Gabri

P.S. I don't like the comparison niether!! what does it means Venice of East? have you ever been in Venice? ;-)
Btw, everyone needs to compare with previous experieces..

Are we talking about the room where the Maharajah candlelight was reflected by the ceiling, making it look like stars above?
If so, I think you're talking about Amber. I was looking forward to showing the room to my daughters in April but access to it was shut off. Pity.

For Udaipur, I'd believe the earthtv web cam link that Amalfi has posted.

Why limit it to Udaipur, Bhopal has several lakes, so has several other cities and towns across India, Kerala is full of lakes and backwater, lets call them all Venice. I am not being critical of you or Amalfi or anybody else, but I find these comparisons quite ridiculous.

Indian towns and cities have plenty of standout features, they needn't be tagged to any place else for people to recognise them. I realise I have gone off topic so I am going to leave it here.

Hey Everybody,

I just wanted to thank you all again for your valuable input and opinions.

I know I'll be virtually stoned to death when I post this, but we're not going to Udaipur, purely for geographical reasons.

Our tour looks like this now (start/end in Delhi):

Agra
Jaipur
Jodhpur
Jaisalmer
Bikaner

The itinerary includes sights around and between those cities as well. And our driver is said to be a better guide than a professional guide so we expect to see/experience some "off the beaten track" things as well. And it allows us to spend a couple of days in each place without being soooo rushed. I know it's still a tight itinerary for 10 days.

As it's our first time visiting India, I think everything we see will amaze us and I can't imagine that our tour will be less fascinating or impressive by missing Udaipur this time. Based on your responses Udaipur must be an amazing place. All the more reason to visit it next time we're there!
