Quickie Kerala visit in October

Hi all,

Hubby and I are going to a destination wedding in the Maldives in October. I've found Delhi-Trivandrum-Male flights and thought we should take advantage of the Kerala stopover.

We'll only have 3-4 days to spare.

Flexible on the amount of time we can spend in each place and don't expect to get much more than an overview of Kerala. Have no idea where to start; what are distances like? What modes of transport would be best?

Would love to hit the following destinations/attractions: Backwaters, Cochin, Munnar or other, and of course Triv (cos we have to).

Given the onward destination, we're not so hot on doing any beaches.
Price not a huge issue, breaking the bank going to Maldives anyway! We're not the roughing it types, at least not anymore

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!!

Just do two places and relax

Backwaters. Coconut lagoon Hotel, Kumerakom. Get them to lay on a houseboat night ad a backwaters cruise for a day. I could spend a whole holiday there (four out five days in Kerala two years ago.).

Kochi. Get a room with a harbour view in a waters-edge hotel. Spend a day sight-seeing and shopping. My 'regular' there (in days of employment) was Brunton's Boatyard Hotel. The rooms are lovely, the position is great, you can watch dolphins from your own balcony... The food is not as good as some others in the Casino group, though.

I agree with Nick.

Coconut Lagoon and Brunton Boatyard are the places I stay when I want pampering!

If you look at the hotel reviews on IndiaMike.com, you will see the reviews I wrote on these two hotels.

Have a great time!

John.

Strongly agree with Nick as well I was in Kerala last Fall for about 4 days and did more or less the same thing (Kumarakom boating, Kochi & Thekkady).

There will be scatterred thunderstorms in October -- so have a backup plan if its really pouring outside.

Neither are cheap, in fact Brunton's is the most expensive hotel I've stayed in India.

I was thinking about Coconut Lagoon only today ---and wondering what their rate per year would be!!! Just a daydream, you understand

Old Courtyard Inn is nice: I reviewed it in the hotels section. A little les expensive than Bunton's Boatyard but no water view.

I looked through the IM hotels section before I posted this, and the Raintree Lodge looked worth exploring too. Its located in a very pleasent section of Fort Cochin.

If you want charm, atmosphere, etc...stick to the Fort area of Cochin. Don't miss the Kathakali dance at the waterfront of Fort Cochin!

Short Holidays in Kerala.

Old Court yard does not match with your requirements. If you arrive in Cochin you could make most out of 4 days.

2 nights in Brunton Boatyard, Fort Cochin.
US$ 322 / night with breakfast.

1 night by houseboat in the route Alleppey - Alumkadave.
US$ 196 / night with all meals.

1 night at Surya Samudra Beach Garden, Trivandrum.
Octogon their best coattage: US$ 299 / night with breakfast.

Flight to Male from Trivandrum.
Any visit to Periyar or Munnar would make the trip not comfortable.
