well the best way is to hit the golden quadilateral ie hit bombay and then head north towards ahmadabad via surat and baroda.the road is excellent especially baroda- a bad stretch is by far the best expressway in the country enroute do visit daman its worth it..theres nothin much in surat though it has a couple of beaches but they aint worth a visit.from a'bad head for udaipur.......thereafter you have two options either head towards jaipur-delhi-amritsar or take a more unconventional route ie jaisalmer-bikaner-ganganagar-ferozepur-amritsar(roads are excellent though it may take a little longer).
The route profile is as follows:
Pune-Bombay (via Expressway)-Thane-Ghodbunder-Vapir-Surat-Bharuch-Vadodara-EXpressway-Ahmedabad-Himmatnagar-Udaipur-Chittorgarh-Bhilwara-Kishangarh-Jaipur-Shahpura-Kotputli-Behror-Gurgaon-Delhi-Panipat-Karnal-Ambala-Rajpura-Ludhiana-Jalandhar-Amritsar.
You can see teh entire route profile (till Jalandhar) in teh folloing link which has the log book of my recent trip to Kashmir from Bombay:

IN case you have any confusion regarding how to bypass Bombay, here is a link that will tell you how:
http://groups.google.com/group/hvkum...via-new-bombay
Please note carefully the instructions how to avoid Ahmedabad city and get onto the Udaipur road directly from the expressway.
Please note carefully how you get off NH8 at Udaipur and go on NH76 via Chittorgarh (and not via Nathdwara/Udaipur).
If you leave Pune by 6 am, you can make it to Udaipur on Day 1.
On Day 2, you can cross Delhi and stop over at Sonipat or Panipat. In case you are delayed that day, you can ideally stop over at RTDC Behror, 100 kms short of Gurgaon.
Details of hotels and facilities en route are mentioned in the log book.
