Is there a "best way" to go from Pondi to Mysore? Does one have to go back to Chennai, then through Bangalore? What about hiring a driver to take us? My husband and I would prefer not to have to take an overnight train. Flying seems like a crazy idea, and a bus doesn't sound so great either. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! We are seasoned travelers who love India and can't resist another adventure there. Thanks!

I don't believe that flying is an option unless you return to Chennai. Looking at a road map of India, it appears that the best roads would go through Chennai and Bangalore. I doubt if hiring a driver would be very efficient and the driver would have to be paid for a RT. You could avoid a sleeper train by taking the 6AM Shatabdi from Chennai, but you would have to take a bus from Pondi to Chennai (3.5 hours)the night before. Shatabdi arrives at 1PM in Mysore. There are 6 daily buses from Pondi to Bangalore (8 hrs, 125 Rps) and then a bus to Mysore would take around 3 hours. I believe that would be the fastest route, though 11 hours on a bus doesn't seem very appealing without at least breaking the trip. It it were me, I'd bus it to Chennai and then take the early morning Shatabdi.

Bruce is right !.. And there is one another Night train to Mysore which will be comfortable Timings Wise !

1. You Could take Train # 6222 which starts from Chennai-Central @21:30 Hrs and Reaches Mysore @08:00 Hrs ..
2. Shatabdi is comfortable except that the Start time [Which is @ 6am] which means you need to Stay a night in chennai Or Travel late-night Or Very Early Morning from Pondicherry to Chennai which is a definite Dis-Comfort !
3. If you have no plans of Visiting any En-Route places [Read Pondicherry - Mysore] , "Cab With Driver" is not needed Really !

Hope this helps !

Car to Chennai would be a good option for that early train.

It would be fast at that time of day. Frighteningly fast, probably!

You'd probably get more sleep on the overnight train, though.

alternativly - the road goes thru tindivanam thru to salem onto mysore. but its best to take a taxi to chennai, and take the night train- it is the most convenient and also the most relaxing.

Madan,

I thought of sharing some info which might help future visitors to this thread and that's my only intention !! !. From Pondicherry, Tiruvanamalai-Bangalore- Mysore is the shortest by road !..

Tindivanam-Salem-Mysore is Far Circuitous and also involves pathetic road Streches between ulundurpettai-Salem [100 + kms] and between Dimbham Ghats to Chamarajanagara[15 kms+] and "Average Road" between "Chamarajanagara and Nanjangudu" [40 + kms] !

Cheers

As for as i know, to go to mysore, pondicherry-tindivanam- thiruvanamalai- bangalore-mysore is shortest and there are few air buses (not sure about volvo) starting at ~10pm everyday and reaches bangalore by next day early morning. this is economical and most buses reach ontime. from bangalore to mysore, its our choice to choose either train or bus. but buses from pondicherry to bangalore need advance booking and if you are traveling on sundays you have to book a month before, since all IT people visiting their home -at weekends, return to bangalore- prefer to travel by private run a/c buses.
YOU can book the bus tickets online. visit websites of KPN travels, Parveen travels, sharma travels. apart from these pondicherry govt bus, tamilnadu govt and karnataka govt buses are there operating overnight services.
