Planning ahead
We're really jazzed about our third trip to India in spring of 2009.... Okay, so that's a long way off but there's no reason to not start planning.
We've done Golden Triangle, Rajasthan, Himalayan foothills but don't intend to repeat any of that. This next trip will be all new - cut right through the center of the country - and we'll have 19 nights.... Kolkata for 5 nights Train to Varanasi - 2 nights Car to Khajuraho - 1 night or 2? Car to Bhopal - 2 nights Train to Mumbai - 5 nights These numbers do not add up to to 19 nights in India and this is why......On our last trip, we took trains except between Bikaner and Jaisalmer. On route, we stopped at a nice little "homestay" in a village called Bhap. It was called the Barsingha Villa. Ooooh, it was just adorable with real desert chic! Had we known better, we'd have spent the night there. So this time we want to spend at least two nights along the way in a small towns or villages. Where should it be? And should we just as well keep the driver all the way to Mumbai? Also, is there any reason we should we reverse this route and start off in Mumbai? |

Between Varanasi and Khajuraho you can spend some time in Chitrakoot. It is a quiet place with a wonderful ghat. The hotel of the MadHya Pradesh is a reasonable place.
When we stayed there two years ago we had also a car. The hotel manager provided us with a guide and we visited a lot of places that play a role in the the story of Rama and Sita. |

We've decided that we will go to Chitrakoot. I'm about to start reading an actual translation of the Ramayana (published by Clay Sanskrit Library) so it will be neat to see the Rama places. Thanks for the recomendation of the Madhya Pradesh Hotel. We'll have to research that.
