Smile Plane or train???

Hi everyone,

I'm a first time traveller to India and would love some help with what would be basic knowledge for most of you guys...

I need to be in Delhi by August 1 and will be coming from Nepal. I'd love to see as much as I can, so was thinking about getting a train. Can anyone recommend a train or bus route, or would it be better to fly?

The same question goes for a route from Kolkata to Dhaka in Bangladesh...

Just bear in mind I'm a solo, 24 year old female...not that it should make much of a difference...

If there are any travellers around in August who'd like to meet up, give me a bell...

thanks guys.

Specifics would help . . .

but until we have 'em, I'd suggest a bus from Kathmandu to Varanasi, a few days (or more) in Varanasi (go to Sarnath while you're there) then by train (@18 hours or so) to Delhi. I've done it both ways, five day bus from Delhi to Kathmandu (oh a very Magic Ride! ) and by plane back to Delhi. The plane flight I've forgotten entirely; the bus ride is Indelible!

Smile train/plane specifics

Thanks guys.

Okay, here are my specifics.
I've organised to do a group tour starting in Delhi on August 1-12. That tour will take me around Delhi, Agra, Varenasi. During June and July, I will be staying in Kathmandu. So I'm wondering if I should go from Nepal to Delhi by road or rail instead of booking a flight... so I can see more of both countries.

After the tour, I'll have another week in India before heading to Dhaka. I've heard about a rail or bus connection between Kolkata and Dhaka, which sounds ideal because I'd to see Kolkata while I'm there.

Any tips or advice would be great..

Kathmandu to Delhi would be stressfull jouney and you cannot do the entire journey on Train...you need to come to Indian border by bus and after that you can board a train to Delhi..maybe from Gorakhpur or someother railhead that fellow IMers can suggest..

but if someone can give some places where you can actually break the journey then that would be great for you..

If the indiamike rail experts don't reply with anything more detailed, Seat61 is often helpful, and I think has good details about getting between India and Nepal. But folks on here will be able to be far more helpful I should imagine!

seat61 is great .. for train info , but can be flaky on other travel modes : they are probably a main reason why people keep asking for the Ktm-Lhasa bus , non-existent for a couple of years.
