Plan B...

If I have to change my plans to visit Darjeeling and Sikkim, due to the strike, what suggestions do people here have for my trip? I will be flying into Kolkata, and have 14 days.

I am happy to take a long sleeper train journey, or a flight - but the journey needs to be straightforward and easily booked.

I'd been thinking of Nepal as an alternative, but it seems difficult as there aren't many flights, and overland is time consuming. I'm a woman in my 50s, travelling alone from the UK. If I have to have a plan B I'm prepared to be flexible. OK - I wanted to see the Himalayas, but if I end up on a beach instead...never mind! Good scenery would be nice though.

Bit of a wasted post as you don't include a date, kind of essential if going to the hills.

But booking will be difficult if you're going in the next week, and if not, the strike should be over after that.

Since you are coming to eastern India I would suggest visiting Orissa. Temples, beaches, lake you will find every thing here and very laid back cool atmosphere.

I arrive in Kolkata in three weeks. I hope you're right, and it is all over by then.

Thankyou for the Orissa suggestion.

it will be over for sure - none of these strikes last longer than a week usually. Still, just in case... go to Kathmandu - it's the perfect time for mountains viewing. Or.. go to Himachel or Uttarakhand - all very easily reached by train/ bus. Kathmandu is very easy for a woman on her own - Air Sahara may have cheap airfares (I did one for 9,200 rupees Delhi-Ktm return in May last year). You can do a Mt Everest flight for around 95 US dollars I think it is.

I've just spoken to a friend who had her Darjeeling travel plans interrupted by the strike. According to her, she and her fiance were able to stay in Kurseong just fine and had a lovely time. This was a couple weeks ago, so maybe the strike has gotten bigger or the situation has changed. But my understanding is that other towns in the hills are not affected, or as deeply affected.

Oh, and regarding the duration -- this strike started the day I left Darjeeling, Feb 12th or so. It's bigger than just a few days, definitely. Though three more weeks is a bit of a stretch.
