One Month Honeymoon in India in August! What are best places considering the weather?

Hi,
We are a Canadian couple planning our honeymoon in India for the month of August. We are pretty seasoned travellers. We took a trip around South East Asia for a year, lived and travelled in Australia for two years, and have been to Europe and Central America on numerous occasions.

We have been to India in the past and spent 3 months in the north (Calcutta-Varanasi-Allahabad-Delhi-Agra-Shimla-Menali). This time we would like to go to the south of India. Unfortunately, we both have proper jobs right now and can only take a month off. We realize that August is the monsoon season in most of India, but would like some advice about the "best" places to go during that time.

Ideally, we would like to have some beach time, but from what I know, Goa closes down during August and the sea is rough and dirty. Any advice on other "beach places in August" would be appreciated.

Usually we are total budget travellers, but as this is our honeymoon, we will probably splurge up to "medium budget".

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Hi, and welcome to IndiaMike.

For a general overview of the weather, kindly check this whole thread: India climate chart

Beach places in August? None that I know of, although some just seem to really enjoy the monsoon. Forget about beach activities though, or that's what I hear. Maybe some of the islands, or consider SE Asia instead, depending on local monsoon conditions there.

Others may want to correct me.

Thanks for the responses. Ladakh is a bit far north. We want to stay south. Is Rajastan a possibility in August?

If monsoon hit s the coast and sea s are rough nad dirty it affects the entire beach coast on the west rains start as early as may in kerala and by august[ it reaches the north of our country !!
scince you have travelled earlier also and this being a honeymoon goa sea should be surely rough and water s muddy but all hotel s should offer you a huge discount and you can explore goa at its best during this time although all regular touristy place shall be off !! But be ready to face rain s !!
Rajasthat around august should be HOT !!!!
We freinds, every monsoon drive down to goa from mumbai via ratnagiri, to enjoi the lush greenery and put up at best of hotle s the only time when marriot taj exotica and likes can fit into our budget s!!!

saajan's right - August is hot and humid, with occasional relief if it is raining and cloudy. Extremely humid which is tiring. But many people come here then because there is generally less rain about - and it coincides with holidays in Europe and UK. If you booked air conditioned rooms, you would be comfortable and it is doable. But as edwardseco suggests I think somewhere like Ladakh would be perfect!

Hello and Welcome to IM,There are some Teriffic Hill Stations in the South,in Tamil Nadu & Kerala.

I am not too sure how these Hill Stations are affected by the Monsoons, But Hey, a bit of Monsoon
Madness could spice up the Honeymoon.

I have a Feeling the Backwaters of Kerala could be
a Romantic proposition around that time.

One of these days I am seriously going to Check out Kerala during or at the end of the Monsoon.

I love the monsoons and traveling during those months. Been trying to arrange a trip to places like Orissa or even Goa and experience the weather during that time.

I spoke to this 'guide' in kerala who advised me not to visit the hilly regions of kerala during monsoons (july-aug) due to lots of rains and roads not being available to drive etc. Not sure about beach spots in Kerala, like Kumarakom.
Kumarakom, if you are interested, has an exotic place you could visit - the Kumarakom lake resort, Ive heard so much about it..and Outlook traveller promises that the resort is a great place throughout the year.

I would also suggest Kerala backwaters during monsoons. But since you have one month for your honeymoon may be you should think of another one or two places.

Goa in Monsoons would aslo be very romantic. Here is a link
