We visited the Golden Triangle in November 2008 and we are booking our next adventure!
It has been suggested that we visit Chandigarh- Shimla-Manali-Amritsar, and we can do this easily with a private driver in 10 days. But we would also like to see Varanasi. Would this be too long on the road, or should we consider trains or internal flights?
Is the above itinerary good, or do you have other suggestions?
We would fly into Delhi from Heathrow.

hi dave..
i think you should go like this chandigarh----amritsar---manali---shimla---then come back to chandigarh.....
and yes varanasi is too far from chandigarh so better you take train for delhi--- varanasi---delhi......

to go to amritsar to manali -------

there r 2 ways for u. from amritsar go to pathankot then on nurpur road head for mandi via baijnath, jogindernagar. from mandi take the kullu road to manali. approx distance 390 kms.

the other way is from amritsar head for jallunder then to hoshiarpur via adampur and from there to mandi via una. mandi onwards its the same route via kullu to manali as in the first option. this route covers lot of plains so u will be able to drive faster. approx 375kms full route to manali.
as you said you have private driver then this route is ok for you.with this route you can save your one day..

and then you can come back to manali to shimla---then shimla to chandigarh---delhi--
in chandigarh you can see rock garden and rose garden and much more places...
