northern India itinerary: What you think about this
Hi, I have never been to india but i plan to go this september. What I would like to do is the following (only major steps mentioned):
- Delhi - fly to leh - down to manali - travel east & enter nepal somewhere (where is the best place?) - kathmandu - darjeeling - kalkutta What you think? Can this be done starting in mid-september? Can you recommend this? |

I don't see why not, as such. It will help people to know how long you plan to go for in order to comment on time needed.
Try also this thread: How to get the most out of the Itinerary section. Land crossings to Nepal get described here, mind you I can't promise you that's precisely up-to-date: http://www.seat61.com/Nepal.htm . There is at least one other crossing in West Bengal I believe; there may be others (one in Bihar for instance, I think? If that is correct and off the top of my head, the latter is no one's favorite route it seems.)

Thank you very much for your information.
I am pretty sure that I will go to Leh first. Now, I have a few questions. I couldn't find the answer here so far. I plan to fly to Dehli around september 10th. Since I have never been to India, I guess I will stay there for 2 days. After that I would like to go to Leh. I don't plan to stay in Leh for more than a few days. I heard that around mid-september the road back is not operated anymore by all operators. Is this an issue? So do you think I have to go straight to manali and then to leh? Another option I am thinking about is to fly from Dehli to Leh, acclimate and then take a bus back to manali. You think I can do this around this time of the year? Thanks |

How many days you plan to be in Leh region?
Ideally, it would be better if you visit Manali, acclimate and then move to Leh. From there, you can go to Delhi and stay for 2-3 days. Then take a flight to kathmandu (Nepal). Let us know more about days you plan to travel, preferred mode of travel etc.. You'll get better inputs. |

I think 3 months will give you a) plenty of time for your plans, and b) no reason to rush past Leh.
I always feel silly commenting on Ladakh as I've never been there, however by all accounts acclimatizing there can take up to several days in itself. This is unpredictable, you can't tell how you will respond, not even for the same person twice I believe. So I'd suggest to give it some more time if you go out there at all, it'd be a shame to just sit around there with a nauseous headache. You'll also just have arrived in India for the first time, it can't hurt to give yourself some time to ease into your new surroundings anyway, and you are in absolutely no hurry. (And fatigue, even just because of possible culture shock or a long flight, will again not reflect positively on the chances and effects of altitude sickness I think.) Connections there and best time of year and so on I can't tell you about; this site has a Ladakh and a Mountaineering forum, where Ladakh also gets regularly discussed (as well as two search engines), so you should be able to find a lot of information already there. Note also the "sticky" threads, threads "stuck" on top of any such forum, which will offer a lot of basic info. ps You will realize you're heading into the Himalayas at the onset of and well into winter, so pack accordingly I'd say, or stock up on the ground, preferably before getting cold, not after it. You'll find tips on what to wear in those sub-forums too. |
