north or south?
We're heading off to india beginning of march for 5 weeks, and cant decide how to divide our time. We'd like to see the wide range of things india has to offer. A wildlife park, a snowy hill station, possibly a backwater trip in Kerala, I'd like to see varanassi, and some ancient buildings! Would it be better to stick to either the north or the south? There seems to be so many places to choose from, hill stations etc, I've read into different areas but still no clearer on where's the best places to go? Any help much appreciated!

trip to india
Hi aimscott, Have you been to india before?
You should be able to sample a fair bit of india in 5 weeks. My suggestion is fly into delhi and out from mumbai. Week 1 - Delhi & Rajasthan Area + Agra Week 2 - Varanasi & Kolkata Week 3 - Chennai - Madurai - Trivandrum Week 4 - Kerala - Houseboat(allepey)+ Munnar Week 5 - Goa & Mumbai Suggested modes of transport. Delhi - Agra + Rajasthan area, Car & Driver Delhi - Varanasi - Kolkata - Train Kolkata - Chennai or Kerala - Plane Chennai - Madurai - Trivandrum - Train Tvdm - Allepey - Train/ Allepey - Cochin - Car? Cochin - Munnar - Cochin - Car & Driver Cochin - Goa - Train - Goa - Mumbai - Train/Fly Rgds - vandy ![]() |

You do want to visit both, I say. But then the north's not all the same and the south's not all the same.
I think you should make sure to visit at least one place in the mountains, be it Mussoorie or Kodai Kanal or Darjeeling or Shillong, or wherever . . . And the ocean. Kolkata is a fascinating city too ![]() Dehra Dun, best rice on the planet. Or just roll the dice . . you can hardly go wrong. |

I haven't been to Kerala, but from what I've heard you don't want to miss it.

We havent been to India before, but this is our first destination on a long trip, after this we fly to Thailand! Thank you for your help, I'll look into these areas a bit more, but can anyone recommend a hill station in the north thats relatively easy to get to from either delhi or varanasi? But not too touristy?!

hi,
i guess north would be better but do include rajasthan i think you should start with rajasthan then delhi and straight north as in march it will be too hot down south and plains so mountains are the best option. |

For the reason of the heat I would recommend to start down South and then go North. Leave India via Chennai if you can. Small, hassle-free airport. Nice people, Tamils, well everyone is nice in India...

And far as a mountain destination in the north and not too far from Delhi I recommend Mussoorie/Landour. I used to live there but haven't been there in 28 years. Many people here have recently said they love it, as I did.
