North India trip, where to go??

Hello all! I believe I will be coming back to India after 2 years with a friend who has never been to India. I am planning to fly into Dehli and then see the Northern states. There is not a time constraint and I think we have enough money to do most of what we want. I have seen most of India except the Mountain areas and Dehli. I would like to have some insights on what are the best things to see and do. Where would be a beautiful place to rent a house for a month or so? We are both interested in Buddhist culture, any ideas?

I am not interested in the party scene I have heard about up there, just want to see and do the hightlights, any help would be appreciated. If you could design a dream itinerary for that area what would it be?

Visit Mcleodganj near Dharamshala in Himachal to experience some of the Tibetan Buddhist influence in India.
You could also fly to Leh from Delhi to experience the wonder that is Ladakh.
