North India in August

I am a 20 year old female travelling to India for the first time in August (I will be by myself). I am flying into Dehli and out of Calcutta and have a month to get between the two.

I have a vague idea of what I want to do - a few days in Dehli, Jaipur, Agra, Varanassi and Calcutta. Aside from this, I'm not really sure where to go; is it worth going further into Rajasthan at this time of year?

I would also be interested in going further north towards to border of Nepal, but again, am not sure of a good town/village to stay in?

Another option would be to travel up to Darjeeling and spend some time there before coming back down to Calcutta.

I'm also assuming that it will be easy to book accommodation/train tickets just a few days in advance, so I don't need too much of a plan (?) and since I am travelling alone the journey can be really flexible, but any tips/idea of where to go inbetween Dehli and Calcutta would be appreciated. The country just seems so vast that it's hard know where to head to.

Hiya...

Welcome to Indiamike...!

Thankfully, the heat of the northern plains would have abated by the time you arrive here... Yes, it would rain quite a bit, wherever you might go... So, better be prepared...

You could think of including a bit of the Himalayas in your itinerary... Or else, it would be a lot of more or less the same thing over and over again... Whether its Darjeeling in West Bengal or somewhere in the hill states of Uttarakhand or Himachal Pradesh, it could act as a nice break and give you a wider perspective of tourist places in Northern India...

And avoid being in Delhi around the 15th August, if possible...
Thats India's Independence Day, and the security arrangements at that time can sometimes act as an irritant...

Have a nice stay...

Cheers...!

How many days would you like to spend in Delhi?
Would you be interested in going on a short trip to Rishikesh or Amritsar?
Then you can move though Agra to Jaipur.
August would not be such a bad time to travel in Rajasthan, fresh from the monsoons.
You can choose one or two places to see, and then go to Varanasi. Can you afford a domestic flight or two? Yes, it is a vast country, and that can simplify things.

Thanks for the replies - and the tip about independence day!

I don't want to spend too long in Dehli - perhaps four or five nights. I think this should be long enough to see the main sights there and to adjust a bit to the heat and culture, because by all accounts it can be a bit of a shock.

I can't really budget for domestic flights and am planning on doing most of my travel by either bus or train.

Five nights in Delhi - good enough, then two in Agra. Next you can plan a week in Rajasthan.

Hi Rosie,

one month is more than enough time to see some places in India. You must spend two weeks in the north. Do the Delhi-Agra-Jaipur-Delhi trip, it will be one week. Spend another one week or so in the hills and then heard to varanasi, lucknow, nalanda and then to Calcutta.

Since you will be on your own, you will have the flexibility to change your plans. However, it is advisable that you book your train or flight tickets in advance as you will not get them at the last moment.

Cheers,
Harsha

You must not assume that train tickets can be got just a few days before. Trains are booked to the full weeks and months in advance. As soon as your plans are made, log on to the railways website, http://irctc.co.in and book yourself some e-tickets, using your bank card.
