New Delhi-Varanasi-Darjeeling-Kerala?

I need some help planning a trip through India that my wife and I are making in late July through late August.
We would like to visit Varanasi, Darjeeling, Northern Kerala . We wil depart for Amsterdam from Mumbai in late august.
We need some help to plan the best route from Delhi - either Varanasi then Darjeeling, or Darjeeling then Varanasi. We'd like to spend 4 nights each in Varanasi and Darjeeling.
Afterwards, we re going to an ashram in North Kerala (the town is Kanhangad, about two hours south of Mangalore, or 7-8 hours Northeast of Chennai, depending on how the route of our trip.)
Because we have such a relatively short time, we want to plan our itinerary for both efficiency and a reasonable budget.
It probably makes sense to make the main journey from the north to the south by airplane.
Other than that, we can travel by air, train, or a combination of both.
(I've been to India many times - this will be my wife's first trip.)
Any advice appreciated!

I am not sure if you want to visit Kerala in July. It is the monsoon season and lasts from June to Aug.

I've been to kerala many times during the monsoon - I like it!

I am still looking for advice on the Northern part of the Journey, please.
Delhi->Varanasi->Darjeeling->Kerala

or

Delhi->Darjeeling->Varanasi->Kerala.
