Need help with 6 or 8 week itinerary

Well, damn. Now I'm thinking I'll fly into Mumbai instead and just meet my mom and sister for the days north, then head back south again.

Thanks so much for all this advice, everyone! Going on a long weekend away from internet but I'll be perusing my Lonely Planet and coming up with better itineraries.

woo-hoo!!! I just booked my flight! I'm flying in to Mumbai on May 13 and out on July 3. I'm so glad I got this advice from y'all before I booked the flight; otherwise I'd be flying in to Delhi instead.

I got a confirmed reservation at a hotel and I'm having a driver meet me at the airport with my name on a placard; I feel much better having this, since I'm arriving at night after however many hours traveling. I booked two nights in the plush hotel (plush by my hostel-only traveling standards) and I hope by the second morning I'm refreshed enough to brave the Salvation Army hostel.

I just have no idea if I'll like the cities or the small towns better. I typically like urban areas more, but in Romania I spent the bare minimum of time in Bucharest and then immediately left for villages and little towns all over the countryside b/c I thought I'd get a better picture of the people's lives there. So I don't know what I'll prefer in India. This is a much looser itinerary than I usually have; I just don't know if I'll want to stay in Mumbai for two days or ten. But it's good for me to be spontaneous.
