If the express at Madurai comes late, I will have the second option of taking a bus to Trichy.

From Madurai to Trichy , there are buses 10 minutes once. Try to get SETC (government Express bus) for non-stop travel and it will be around 3 to 3.5 hours travel time. Also there are many a trains between madurai and trichy (Which takes 3 hours)
