My itinerary---advice needed
I guys. I started a thread a couple of days ago and i'be been getting very helpfull comments (thanks BengalTiger and Steven). But now i gotta buy my plane ticked in 5 days and i have a big question that's been asked here many times but still couldn't find a decisive answer. I have no choice but to go there in the summer, even if it's gonna be the rainy season. I will be travelling 4 months. Now I can leave on the 15th of april of 15th of may (It doesn'T matter for me) I can do this trip clockwise or counterclockwise. What should i do fellow travellers?? Any help would be great. Here is a draft of my plan which is still subject to changes after i have been recommended some new places by IM'ers. Thanks in advance!
Mumbai Goa Hospet-Hampi Cochin Trivandrum Madurai Mysore Chennai Puri Calcutta Darjeeling Patna Gaya (then back to Patna) Varanassi Allahabad Bandhavgarh Park Allahabad Agra Delhi Kalka Shimla Kalka Delhi Jaipur Ajmer (Pushkar) Jodhpur Jaisalmer Jodhpur (Mt abu....) Udaipur Ahmedabad Aurangabad+ ellora caves Back to mumbai Last edited by Mamamia : Jan 11th, 2005 at 11:36. |

hi .. where were you....??
i suggest you do it the other way. so first mumbai to abu road by aravalli express (9007). from there its abut 25 kms by bus. http://www.indiatravelogue.com/dest/raj/mtab.html (this is night number 1) http://www.trainenquiry.com/TrainsBe...ROAD%2c+AB R+ stay for the rest of that day in mt abu and see everything. by next day try and arrange a way to go to udaipur, either by share taxi with another tourist, or (if there indeed are bus services connecting mt abu to udaipur) then opt for bus. its about 185 kms. about 3 hrs. reach udaipur next evening. (night 3) see udaipur next 3 days. these should cover a return trip to chitoregarh (nothng in the cty aoart from the fort... )and ranakpur. on night 6 take a bus to jodhpur. you will reach early morning of day 7. http://www.rajtourism.com/html/citie...r/ranakpur.htm see jodhpur for day 7 and 8. take night train (4810) to jaisalmer on night 8 to reach jaisalmer early morning on day 9. http://www.trainenquiry.com/Schedule...JU+JSM+EXPRESS see the fort. see the city & the 3 "haveli"s. arrange for a conducted trip to "sam sand point" in the evening. about 400-700 ruppees. if you want you can take a camel safari too but that will take you about 2-3 days. i never did it so i dont know. but since its so popular amongst everyone, i suggest you go for it. so day 9,10,11, 12 will be spent in jaisalmer. hotel prince on hanuman circle isnt a bad one. there's another one called "fotress view" or fort vew or something, a lttle before hanuman crcle, which is popular with tourists and is located at one of the best spots from where to take a "full shot" of the golden fortress. the marketplace in between hanuman circle and the fort entrance, is very interesting.. you should spend an evening there. on 12th afternoon 4.15, take the 4060 to jaipur. you will reach on early morning day 13. i suggest you take one day of "conducted tour" and the next day to explore the city by yourself. go to pushkar/ajmer on day 14th evening and stay in pushkar till 15th afternoon and return to jaipur. day 13, 14 and 15. http://www.trainenquiry.com/TrainsBe...y2=JAIPUR+-+JP on the 15th night take a train to delhi. i suggest 2462 mandor express. http://www.trainenquiry.com/Schedule...MANDOR+EXPRESS see delhi all you can. days 16, 17, 18 and 19. on 19th night take the 2311 to kalka. you will reach at 5.00 in the morning and then take the 253nr to shimla at 6.30 http://www.trainenquiry.com/Schedule...+DLIKLK+MAI L http://www.trainenquiry.com/Schedule...II+HOLIDAY+SPL. so day 20 at 12 in the afternoon you are in shimla. see the mall, the church, the shimla kali bari. take a bus to kurfi. enjoy shimla for days 20. 21 and 22. on the 22nd night i suggest you take a night bus to mussouri. you will be there on 23rd morning. have a look at mussouri on 23rd day and day 24. in the evening go by bus to haridwar, which is very close. spend night 24 and day 25 and 26 in haridwar. see rishikesh too. on the night of 26th take a bus for an overnight journey to nainital. very nice hill station. 27th morning you will be there. spend days 27, 28, 29 there. on 29th night take a bus to agra - commonly available - many travel agencies. the 30th morning you will be in agra. spend the day and the next (31st) in agra. on the 31st night head for khajuraho. i am not sure why you want to go for bandharvgar cos there are many other national parks. the jim corbett national park is more famous anyday. as is kanha of rudyard kipling's "jungle book" fame. also there is no train between agra and allahabad. i am not sure exactly how to reach khajuraho... possibly by night bus journey to a certain point and then by car to khajuraho. check the archieves here - i remember seeing something like that recently. even khajuraho s closer than allahabad to bhandarvgarh!! so you should be in khajuraho on the 32nd morning about 11. see all the temples. day 33 on the 33rd night, take a bus to varanasi. if i know right its very much available. so you will be in varanasi on the 34th morning. spend day 34, 35, 36 in varanasi, possibly one more if you like it. see sarnath. i dont know why you want to go to gaya. if you want there are many trains from varanasi to patna, even trains from varanasi directly to gaya. but i suggest you head straight for darjeeling. i suggest you take the 5034. http://www.trainenquiry.com/Schedule...RH+TWON+EXPRES even if you go to gaya, you can take a train to new jalpaiguri in derjeeling from patna. http://www.trainenquiry.com/TrainsBe...AI GURI+-+NJP damn i have lost count of the days. assuming you head for darjeeling from varanas, you will be there on the 37th morning. it will take you a mimimum of 5-6 days if you want to see darjeeling and sikkim properly, which i suggest you do. cos you ddnt see much of the northern himalayas except in a couple hill stations. its unlikely that sikkim and darj will bore you. dont forget to ride the toy train.search IM archieves for details. so 37,38,39,40,41, 42 and 43rd day in darjeeling region. on 43rd night take the 2344 njp-sealdah to calcutta & head for a hotel in sudder street http://www.trainenquiry.com/Schedule...ALDAH+DARJEELI see cal for days 44, 45, 46, 48. on 48th night take train 8007 to puri (puri express). you should be in puri at about 7.30 in the 49th morning. see the temple the beach. go to konark (for sure) along the marine drive. then head back to bhubaneshwar (1-2 hours by train... you can buy instant tickets at the station). i suggest you stay in pur-konark for days 49 and 50 and come to bhubaneshwar on 50th night 9.00ish. (by taking the 7.30 train from puri). see bhubaneshwar temples and nandan kanan on day 51. take the coromandel express on the 51st night to chennai. http://www.trainenquiry.com/Schedule...COROMANDAL+EXP you wont have much tme cos you will reach chennai on 52nd evening 6-ish. i suggest you take a "couducted trip" of chennai on the 53rd day through indian tourism dept corp. on 53rd night take an overnight bus to pondicherry. stay in pondicherry for 54th and 55th. on 55th night take a bus to madurai. see madurai for day 56 and head for trivandum on same night. not much else apart from the temple. so 57th morning you'll be in trivandum. stay there for some time... days 57, 58, 59. on 59 night take a bus to cochin so on 60th morning you should be in cochin. i never made this journey myself so i do not know. even if there is no night-bus, you could be there on 60th afternoon by early morning bus. stay there for days 60, 61, 62 and 63, possibly in a hut beside the backwaters. on 63rd night head for mysore by bus. take a conducted trip of mysore. that will be day 64. i never wenbt to hospet or hampi so i cant tell you how to go there. take a bus or train whatever is available. from there head for goa.. chill all you want. then take the 2779 to pune. you will reach very early in the morning. at about 4. hope the train is late or wait in the station for an hour or so, if it snt. see pune on that day. later that night you can go to aurangabad by bus. see ajanta and ellora from aurangabad. read my posts regarding ajanta - ellora. it should take you one day for each or ajanta and ellora-dev giri fort take a night bus or the 1004 devgiri express to mumbai. http://www.trainenquiry.com/Schedule...2cDEVAGIRI+EXP take your time to see mumbai. you should have about 50 days left !!!! as you can see, if you travel nights and "see" days, then you can cover a lot in very little time. personally i feel it isnt a great idea to hang along in any one place for a long time (like say 2-3 weeks) cos the india experience s not made up by any one or two cities/places alone. of course if the place is somethng like a varanasi, or a jaisalmer or an almora, then its another matter. you can make changes anywhere in this plan. you can incorporate any other sub trips if you want. take the extra day at some place if you wish. it wont change anything cos all these trains and buses are "daily" service. so you needn't change the route. you can incorporate your "wild life" part anywhere, kanha, or jim corbett or bhandarvgarh or even ranthambore in rajasthan. since you arnt seeing much of the hill stations, it wont be a bad idea to go to nepal (kathmandu - pokhra) from darjeeling for a week or so. in fact having been to those places, i highly recomend it. phew... it took me over 3 hours to wrte you this "road map" hope it helps!!! Hi BT! I've been working long hours in the past few days and now i can catch a bit of a break. Wow mate, i cannot tell you how helpful your input is. You really did a great job at creating for me a great trip. One thing is for sure, i'm going to spend a longer time in the hill stations and i was already considering going to nepal...
Im also gonna try to change the bus trip to train as much as possible because i always like train journeys and they are safer. Do you think i should leave in april or in may, considering the monsoon. Also my budget is around 180 000R. I think it's gonna be enough to really have a fun time ( altough spending less is always great...)thanks again for your time BT. I reallly appreciate your help. |

is this budget exclusive of the to and fro air fare or is it included?
both ways its safe.... if its on top of air fair, then you can live like a king !! even if it isnt its sufficient... the problem with train journeys is that you got to book before hand... also you cant change the dates ... with bus journeys you can get a ticket from one or the other agency.... which really helps if you like a certain place and decide to stay on for a day or 2 more see? which national park have you decided on? also i suggested the trip in this clockwise direction cos it floods in up-bihar-west bengal todards the last part of monsoon,,, so you best finish it off early... meanwhile let the monsoon brng the temp down in the south before you go there.... |

I think i will still go to bandharvgar, because i heard it has the biggest population of tigers. But a second trip to Corbett is something that i will consider once there. The ammount of cash that i gave you is exclusive of the airfare. So i have 180000 just for India. I have a question concerning Darjeeling. Given the fact that i will be there around July, August, Don't you think it's gonna be flooded? I hear that they receive 600mm a month during that period.

i know and heard of rainfall in darjeeling... but a hill station getting flodded??? no way !!! besides you wll have done with darjeeling before august.
18,0000 for india alone is fab !!! you can travel a.c. for both the train (3 a.c.) and bus journeys (highly recommended, cos you will be comming in summer). also an a.c. room is about 2-3 dollars more than a non ac... and even though stories of lousy non-ac rooms are rampant, i never heard of a.c. rooms which didnt live up to the tarrif. are you travelling alone or with someone ? double rooms should be anything from rupees 350- 700 (ac) . non ac sngle rooms can be anything from 200 - 350 . the range depends on how popular the place si , how much of a 'big city" , how much of a "in the peak season" traveller you end up being when you get there etc. if you go to nainital, then jim corbett is a very good add on. since you are gong to darleeling directly from varanas, giving patna-gaya the miss, you will have a chance of getting back to gaya if you do opt to go to nepal from darjeeling. enter india again from the bihar (birganj) sde and head for patna. see gaya, nalanda and take night train (NOT BUS) from patna to calcutta. since you have an ample budget t wount be a bad idea to visit at least one place in the north-east by flight. the money bont pinch you. also it will ensure that you dont leave out that part completely. let me know if thats ok with you and i can supply some details. the biggest draw for you, if you do opt for this is, kaziranga with its rhinos !! another good add on to the plan is a small gujrat leg, before you head for rajasthan. so instead of taking the abu road train from bombay, you could take a train to ahmedabad. from there to somnath temple (near veraval.. there are no good hotels in somnath itself... best to stay in veraval after you fisng "seeing ' the temple.) and then to diu. finally to gir forest, which is the biggest "lion reserve" in india. from there you can touch rajkot (or if possible straightaway) head for mt abu, and there onwards carry on as per the plan i gave you. you can even consder the "little rann of kutch".. its a very unique place.while in ahmedabad, you could see the sabarmat ashram of ganghi ji fame. let me knmow if thats acceptable and i shall give you the details. in calcutta dont forget to visit the indian museum and birla mesuem (near modern high school). in mardas dont forget the snake park. in delhi dont forget the dolls museum and the dilli haat. dont worry you will have time for all these places and so many cites. just plan smartly. travel nights and see days. after a particularly tedious stretch, chill for a couple of days in laid back places like udaipur, jaisalmer, shimala, varanasi, puri, pondicherry, goa etc. so that way the exertion wont get to you. in fact the way your plan is, there s a "laid back" place every 4-5 destinatons or so.. as if to help you take rest !!! ![]() |

start as early as you can.........
august is when the floods are in up-bihar-bengal-orissa..... june is when the rains start so if you do the flood prone areas by end june and come to the hot south after its rained there.. you an avoid both floods and extreme temp ![]() |

It may seems stupid, but the biggest problem i find while going to india is trying to decide of the departure date. I can give you 4 choices: 15 april, 1st May, 15 May, 1st june. Which one do you think?
So i say your vote goes toward April 15th. The ideal for me would be May 1st. Would it be problematic? |
