Good itinerary but I have this suggestions.
Since u r going to Jodhpur you should not miss Jaisalmer. There is an overnight train from Jodhpur which reaches Jaisalmer early morning. There is a similar overnight train from Jaisalmer. Hire a cab in Udaipur & visit Ranakpur & Kumbhal garh. You may think of cutting short ur stay in Darjeeling/Varanasi by a day to include the places mentioned above. |

We have been to Jaisel last year and it was great. Stayed at the Desert Boys GH which was great too! Even did the camel safari into the desert. To not spoil or great memories, we have decided to skip Jaisel on this trip and make our next trip there. Thanx for the info on Udaipur - will do! |

There is a fantastic resort almost built in to the fort at Kumbhalgarh & in the reserve forest. A night's stay here is quite memorable.
BTW when you visited Jaisalmer last time did u not visit Jodhpur? |

Your itinerary is fine, except that you are not spending any time in Mumbai. Is it because you have seen the city on your previous visit ?

Dear Eopperman,
Your observation:- "Wednesday 20-Dec Full day in Varanasi 18:35 Depart Varanasi 1223 NE Express Thursday 21-Dec 10:35 Arrive NJP (Bagdoghra)" ============== @@@The following is the schedule of 2506 NDLS-GHY North East Express on ALD-GHY section: ..... 7 ALD ALLAHABAD JN 1 15:45 15:55 634 1 8 MGS MUGHAL SARAI JN 1 18:10 18:30 787 1 9 BXR BUXAR 1 19:56 19:58 881 1 10 ARA ARA 1 20:51 20:53 948 1 11 PNBE PATNA JN 1 22:10 22:20 999 1 12 BJU BARAUNI JN 1 01:20 01:40 1109 2 13 BGS BEGU SARAI 1 01:59 02:01 1124 2 14 KGG KHAGARIA 1 02:38 02:40 1164 2 15 KIR KATIHAR JN 1 05:20 05:35 1288 2 16 BOE BARSOI JN 1 06:28 06:30 1348 2 17 KNE KISHANGANJ 1 07:25 07:27 1405 2 18 NJP NEW JALPAIGURI 1 09:15 09:30 1492 2 ============================== ========== @@@Please note that you have to get into this train at Mughalsarai but NOT in Varanasi. ========== V.Srinivasa Prasad 12.4.2006/16.00 hrs. |

Dear Eopperman,
20th December,2006 happens to be WEDNESDAY. --------- Only 2436 NDLS-DBRT Rajadhani Express (Bi-weekly) and 5636 Okha-GHY (Weekly) directly connect Varanasi with NJP. .......... But 2436 passes through Varanasi on THURSDAYS and SUNDAYS. and 5636 passes through Varanasi on MONDAYS. ........... So, please take 2506 North-East Express (or) 4056 Brahmaputra Mail (or) 4084 Mahananda Express from Mughalsarai on 20th December,2006, because in 2424 Rajadhani Express you will NOT be issued ticket from MGS to NJP, since bookings between two Intermediate Stations falling in the route of Rajadhani Express is PROHIBITED. =========== V.Srinivasa Prasad 13.4.2006/9.55 hrs. |

Won't it be really cold in Darjeeling in December? I'm not sure.
I actually like the itinerary as I love train travel and love Rajasthan and want to visit the north east. It may be a bit to much for two weeks though. I would skip the day in Mumbai. One night in Mumbai would be good to relax and adjust but a daytime visit to Mumbai before moving on will be unstaisfactory in many ways I think. Likewise the night in Delhi at the end is just added hassle. Reconsider that possibly. One day only in Agra is perfect and the train to Varanasi looks a good idea rather than going back to Delhi. Good luck, rab |

Are you arriving in Mumbai in the am? If so, you may think about finding a place to stay, just to be able to shower and leave your bags. I think this would allow you to be more comfortable and have a better experience. You won't be worried about bags etc. and you would have an place to decompress for a while. Other than that, I would go directly to Agra, since you are flying out of Delhi and add one nightto Udaipur and one night in Delhi at the end (since you are going there to fly out). You have a tight schedule so pre-book all your transportation. I went to all of the above last trip (except Agra) and I think you are seeing a good sampling of India! Enjoy

Thanks guys.
Rab, our flight arrives in Mumbai and we have to kill time until the first available flight to Udaipur. We are travelling with a friend who has never been to India (we have been in Mumbai before)- the idea is just to see the best spots of Mumbai before our departure for Udaipur. Casey, you have a point. After a helluva long flight from South Africa, I think we should get a room just for a shower etc. Maybe just a dayroom. We have been to India two years back and saw most of Rajastan. Will definately pre-book all transportation. The flights doesn't seem the biggest worry, but getting rail tickets. Any suggestions? |

There are several excellent threads on IM about pre-booking your rail transportation with links to the railway site. E-tickets are now available and you can print off you ticket! The site takes a bit of patience, but even I was able to get the hang of it and get my transportation sorted out.

Can anyone recommend a decent day room in Mumbai. We will be arriving around 5 in the morning and leave again the afternoon on a domestic flight?
