Mumbai to Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer by Car / Please guide...

I want to do a road trip from Jogeshwari, Mumbai to Rajasthan, covering Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer.

Period: November 2012, 10th to 17th.

Requesting all experienced enthu. drivers to guide how to make the itinerary and what all I can cover in this road trip.

You can opt for following route and plan your trip.

Mumbai - Baroda - Ahmedabad - Mehsana - Mount Abu - Pali - Jodhpur -Pokhran - Jaisalmer - Jodhpur- Haldighati -Udaipur - Himmatnagar - Ahmedabad - Baroda - Mumbai

I wont be planning to goto Mt. Abu,

Mumbai -> Udaipur -> Jodhpur -> Jaisalmer -> Baroda -> Mumbai.

I guess it should not be required to go back to Jodhpur after doing Jaisalmer.

Are there any places to cover from Udaipur to Jodhpur and From Jodhpur to Jaisalmer.

This would be my first trip covering so much of driving. Previously I have done upto 300 kms. straight drive out of Mumbai. But can cover Mumbai to Udaipur in a day in 12 hrs drive.

With taking slight diversion from Udaipur you can reach Jodhpur via Chittorgarh / Ajmer.
However plan this based upon available time.

Mumbai -> Udaipur -> Chittorgarh - > Bhilwara -> Ajmer -> Jodhpur -> Jaisalmer -> Baroda -> Mumbai.

No need to go all the way to Ajmer actually. Take a left from Bijainagar, 50 kms of two lane road will lead you to Beawar, then onto Barr and Jodhpur.

Thats why I sugeest slight diversion , if you want to add some more place of Rajasthan in your itinary.

I really seem to depend on this site for experiences of all for suggestions. My trust in members / friends is getting stronger now.

How about talking a night halt in Kumbhalgarh for fort sightseeing and night light and sound show
And next day moving to Ranakpur and then to Jodhpur.

Day 1 - Mumbai-Udaipur
Day 2 - Udaipur
Day 3 - Udaipur-Kumbhalgarh
Day 4 - Kumbhalgarh-Ranakpur-Jodhpur
Day 5 - Jodhpur
Day 6 - Jodhpur-Jaisalmer
Day 7 - Jaisalmer
Day 8 - Jaisalmer-Ahmedabad
Day 9 - Ahmedabad-Mumbai

Travelling with Wife and Child (6 years) in Maruti Ritz VXI.

I hope the above itinerary is fine and not much hectic too. This one I have shortlisted after much research thru travelogues.

Would require your advice whether I need to make any changes and also please suggest budget / good hotels for stays.

I read the Travelogue. But that seems to be to Barmer and Jaisalmer and they havent covered Udaipur and Jodhpur. I shall note the routing for Ahmedabad - Jaisalmer (places to cover)

Can anyone please guide me for Tanot, Longewala, BP609. Has anyone done it from Jaisalmer. And what are the preparations required for making this day trip.

If your last longest drive was 300 kms at a stretch, the day 8 is going to be epic! Its 544 kms and rated at 8 odd hours, will likely take you 12.

I wouldnt recommend BP609 for this trip unless you drop something else. We did ~ 1400 kms in 4 odd days Jaipur-Nakoda-Jaisalmer-Khichan-Pushkar-Jaipur and while i loved the opportunity to photograph and stop as and when we felt, it was tiring. Spent a full day recovering at home. You can see my blog for the relevant post, road conditions and route ideas.

I dont feel the same attraction / novelty for the desert as many who drive in from other states but in our case, it was an easy decision to drop the border post (its 110 km drive one way and would have taken an entire day). Bear that in mind and recalculate your planned driving distances and time commitments accordingly.

Will try to get some part in the Itinerary skipped and get time for rest. Before return back from Jaisalmer to Ahmedabad to Mumbai.
