Mumbai to kerala in october
Hi all
Thanks for this great site. Filled with usefull info. Me and a friend are landing in Mumbai 10. october. Plans are to take the train down the west cost to Kerala and back to Mumbai. We are leaving from Mumbai 12. november. What should we see and what should we absolutly not see? We are not looking for an itinerary as such, just for some good ideas. We are mid 30. Male. Well traveled. Medium budget. So far we decided to do a backwater trip in Kerala, and maybe some trekking and water rafting. |

when I looked at the seats disponibility at www.indianrail.gov.in they were almost all sold out and there were waiting lists. But maybe not for October, I looked at December. Anybody knows how trustworthy are these info on internet?

Rohde,
Absolutely you need to book in advance. October is holiday time in most of india except kerala, so tickets are going to be on short supply (very short supply i may add)... adamanta, indianrail is an official IR website, and is quite accurate. trains from mumbai start from 3 different stations- Mumbai CST, Dadar and Kurla LTT. mostly a cst train should stop at dadar, but thats about it. From the airport, Kurla is the nearest and CST the farthest... |

thanks dipydoo
actually I have been trying to buy a ticket for a train from Kochi to Mumbai for January and the website is still not working. I am not sure what stations are in Mumbai, as the trains from Ernakulam arrive either to Lokmanya Tilak (T), Panvel or Vasai Rd. None of them looks like Mumbai to me... Any idea if I should also look for tickets from these stations to Mumbai CST (I will be staying in the Fort area) or can I just take a taxi? Looks like a long drive though (looking at the map) |

Train Nr 6382 goes from Ernakulam Town to Mumbai CST, starting at 12h50 and arriving in Mumbai CST at 04h50 on day 3. I think it's to soon to book a ticket for january. If I'm not wrong you can only book 3 months in advance.

thanks. 2 nights in a train is a no-no option. I hope I can get a train from Vasai Rd or Lokmanya Tilak to Mumbai CST or anywhere else in Mumbai. I cannot even find Lokmanya on the Google maps!

You can always take a flight from Cochin to Mumbai to save time. 142 € with Jet Airways.

How long are you going for?
There is some good trekking up in the Ghats. If you are adventurous then think about the three day trek between Kodaikanal and Munnar, or a three day one in Periyar Wildlife Reserve (stay at Kumily and organise from there). Varkala is always a good destination to see (specially on a medium budget). Must sees are elephant festivals and drum groups. Fort Cochin and Kovalam are the most developed areas for tourists, and many people dont like that ..... But I like both of them.

Lokmanya Tilak seems to be in Sion, a suburb from Mumbai, not too far from Bandra.

New question. I think Divali is late october. Where would be a good place to stay during these days? Last edited by Rohde : Oct 1st, 2008 at 23:41. Reason: typing |
