Mumbai to Ellora return in a few days

Help!First timer to India and would love some advise. We arrive in Mumbai on a Sunday morning (2am) and leave 4 days later (pm) from Mumbai to Delhi. Is there anyway that we could fit in a trip to the Ellora Caves and see some of Mumbai? Would love to hear any advise on how to get there, where to stay, if there is a good tour you could take etc... all for the budget conscious. Thank You

Welcome to IM, cheekychico! Good question....kinda depends on what kind of fast traveller you are and how much time you want to spend on the road versus seeing things close by.

No matter how you do it, it will take the better of one day to travel between Mumbai and Ellora/Ajanta area. Either by car, bus, or train or a combination thereof, you'll be spending a good amount of time on the road.

The Ellora/Ajanta area can be done in a day, or two, or a week, depending on your interest. Its a hot time of year, and certainly a consideration, given your type of travel.

Give us more specifics

Thank you for your quick response.I am aware that we are leaving our timing a little tight to see Ellora and Mumbai. Would you recommend only going to Ellora? We are more than happy with "uncomfortable long" travel. I am curious to see if there is a tour company that will do a quick Mumbai to Ellora tour so that we have less organising to do when we get to Mumbai and more chance to enjoy ourselves.

Truth be known, you'd be pushing it to get all 3 cities done in 4 days.

You could consider one of three options:

1) get a taxi (as soon as you arrive), to Aurangabad (this is 400km & around 11 hours drive time). This may save you some time but will cost a packet (400km x 2, return journey for the driver x ~rp10 per km. = ~rp8000 ~US$200 one-way).

2) get a flight to Chikkalthana airport Aurangabad, from Mumbai (domestic). This would save you a lot of time (if you can get a flight) and, may allow you to see both sites over two days and, then of course, you'd have to get a flight back to Mumbai.

3) get a train in the morning (around 7am) to Aurangabad. You'd only have the chance to see one of the two locations from a day outing. The votes as to which one to visit are almost evenly split between Ellora & Ajanta.

Good luck in making your decision.

Cheers
Zoltan
