Mumbai to Delhi by road
Hello,
I plan to drive from Mumbai to Delhi in the last week of June. Plan is to take 5 days to cover the distance, stopping wherever I can on the way. Can someone please suggest possible itenaries? I was thinking of going via Madhya Pradesh, but nothings fixed. Also, will the impending monsoons wash away my plans?
Cheers,
Nitin

5 days for what ?
I have driven from Surat to Delhi several times, infact I am driving again to Delhi by this month end.
I normally start at 6.30 to 7.00 AM in morning from Surat & reach Jaipur by 10.00 PM in the night the same day, with couple of breaks in between. Surat to Jaipur - 920 kms
Next day start again in the morning & its 4 1/2 hrs drive from Jaipur to Delhi.
-----
So for you, basically its a 2 day drive from Mumbai to Delhi, with a night halt at Udaipur
Day one: Mumbai to Udaipur (802 kms)
Day two: Udaipur to Delhi (635 kms)
Just follow NH 8, the road is excellent, why do you want to go MP?
Here's the route
Mumbai - Surat - Baroda - Ahmedabad - Himmatnagar - Udaipur - Ajmer - Jaipur - Delhi
Pls take all the expressways only. On this route you do not need to enter in any city, just use the bypass only.
Ahmedabad bypass is a bit congested.

Thanks for the route, Ashish.
Well, 5 days because I have 5 days
so I can stop and see a few places on the way. Since you have been on this route previously, can you recommend some places that I could visit, other than the usual touristy places?
Thanks again.

Nitin

If you have five days, and if Rajasthan isn't an attraction, consider Mumbai/indore/shivpuri/gwalior/jhansi/agra/delhi
its different.
The MP tourism hotel at Shivpuri next to the sanctuary is worth an overnight stay.

well, then its upto your personal liking which route you would like to use whether thru NH8 or MP.
I have never been on MP route, so can't really comment.
You now know both the routes. so I think you can decide if you wanna stop over in MP for sight seeing or Guj & Raj for sight seeing.

Thanks for the route capt. Can I trouble you to also tell me if you know whether the roads are any good? The last time I was in MP the roads were terrible as a rule... but that was in 2004. Has there been any improvement? I went to Jabalpur, Satna, Khajuraho, Bandavgarh, Kanha, etc. and the roads were really bad all through...
The roads should be decent since you are going before the monsoons. Try to stick to the National Highways (vs the State highways as much as possible..) they are better and facilities are easier to come by.
Some of the roads are sporadically excellent... the Jhansi/Gwalior road comes to mind.

OP
I am assuming that you will also be driving on the return journey, Delhi-Mumbai. If I were you, I would take the MP route mentioned on the outbound drive (Mumbai-Delhi) and then on the return take the Rajasthan-Gujarat route. that way you can see both routes for yourself, different sites along the way and post a mastr thread with pics along both routes on IndiaMike

NH8 Best route to delhi from mumbai
Hi Guyz,
I left mumbai on 4 feb 2011 (8 am) reached delhi on 5th feb (7:30 pm)
Simple tip :-follow NH8 (just take care of following points)
1.) 1300 rs for toll (total 25 tolls)
2.) 4000 rs petrol
3.) When using baroda ahmedabad express way get out at ring road. (don't go into the city plz else police will ask for some stupid yellow band )
4.) Use By pass at udaipur ( i stayed at udaipur 500 rs for night)
5.) TAKE NH 76 from Udaipur (NH 8 is 2 lane where as NH76 is 4 lane )
6.) Be careful not go towards Kota after you cross chittorgarh.
6.) Lot of construction on jaipur delhi patch it will take 6 hours to cover 200 kms
Happy Journey.
Regards
Rajneesh
