hello, we will be in mumbai for a week in a couple weeks (for my husband's work) and then we plan to take a week or so traveling. we will have our 2 year old in tow. we are trying to figure out the best itinerary.

we would like to depart mumbai by train on a thursday evening or friday morning. (we will be flying out of delhi 2 mondays later.)

so we will have about 8-9 days until we need to be in new delhi for our flight home

idea #1 is:
mumbai
udaipur
jaipur
agra
delhi
(but from my reading of the train schedules/map, udaipur is out of the way and requires a circuitous back-track. is that right?)

idea #2 is:
mumbai
jaipur
agra
delhi

idea #3 is:
mumbai
varanasi
agra
delhi
(i realllllly want to go to varanasi but i think it may have to wait until another trip - unless this doesn't sound too crazy to some of you.)

any better ideas?

finally, i think we would like to get the 1st class AC sleep car for our long journeys.

does anyone know whether we get a whole room/unit to ourselves or do you usually end up sharing with others? (we ask because we think we may get some down time by being able to close the door and letting our toddler be free to play as he likes inside our unit. this might be tougher if others are in there with us...)

thank you in advance for any guidance you can provide!!

Looks like Mumbai, Jaipur, Agra, Delhi.

Mumbai to Varanasi is a long journey, and only one poorly timed train (dep 21.25 arr 00.02 - 27 hours) has first class.

Mumbai-Udaipur trains only run on Wed, Fri & sun and don't have first Class.

You need to book your First Class tickets in India, then you can mention on the reservation slip that you have a 2 year old, this will give you a very good chance of getting a 2 berth coupe instead of a 4 berth cabin.

thanks and flight question

thank you steven_ber!

we were talking and thought this may be an option:

-fly mumbai to delhi then train to varanasi > agra > jaipur > delhi

or
- fly mumbai to varanasi then train to agra > jaipur > delhi

do either of these sound better than option #2 in the earlier post?

idea #2 is:
mumbai
jaipur
agra
delhi

Unless 1st class AC is a lot roomier than 1st class with normal air, there's not much room for a child to run around ... maybe 3 feet max between the berths and the wall.

In 2AC, he'd probably have more kids to play with, and a whole carriage to run around!

mum > delhi - something to add?

if we go with the mumbai - jaipur - agra - delhi intinerary, is there something particularly special along that route we should add in?

we have 8 full days

we want to see as much as we can but we also want to keep it on the simple side because we have our 2 year old...

thank you again!!

Bundi? Pushkar? Chittorgarh? worth a stop?

hello again, before i ask my question i want to say that our thoughts are with the people of Delhi today. though i am mostly a "lurker" on IM, it was good to see so many Delhi IMers checking in...

after some additional research on our itinerary I have a more specific question... what do you think of stops at any of the above places?

here's what i'm thinking:

*start in mumbai > fly to udaipur
*spend 2 nights in udaipur > go to Chittorgarh (looks like bus is the best option... what about hiring a car?)
*chittorgarh (just for the day) > bus or car to Bundi
*one night in Bundi > bus to Pushkar (1 or 2 nights?)
*Pushkar (Ajmer) > train to Jaipur (2 or 3 nights?)
*jaipur > train to agra (1 to 2 nights?)
*agra> train to Delhi

we have 8 nights (not including our time in mumbai and delhi) so we could stay places longer/shorter or maybe fit one more/less in... but we are trying to keep it simple and streamlined for our 2 year old

does this sound good? do you think something else is better?

thank you so much for your time. we truly appreciate it!
