Most of india 31/10 /07- 02/01/08 - is it too ambitious?

Hi everyone. Here is a rough itinerary of where we would like to go. It will just be me and a friend traveling on a low budget (150 000Rp's). We arrive in Mumbai on the 31'st of October and leave again on the 2'nd of January. This will be the first time we visit India, but we both have been around (I love to trek in Africa and he did Europe and the states a while ago). We are not planning a definite route and we will improvise it as we go along.

We dont have a final route yet, so this is it so far (We wont necessarily do it in this order):
Mumbai (arrive here, but we will leave as soon as possible)
Jaisalmer (we want to do a 3 days desert trek with camels here)
Jodhpur
Pushkar
Jaipur
Delhi
Agra
Varanasi
Bodhgaya
Darjeeling (at least 4 days here)
Pandua, Malda, Gaur
Shantiniketan
Kolkata
Sundaerbans

From here we are not completely sure how to travel, but here is a rough idea:
Chennai
Pondicherry
Madurai
Goa - Mombai (1 week - 10 days of beaches and relaxing, any suggestions are more than welcome)

We would like to spend the time between Christmas and new years in mumbai.

As you can see we are not planning on getting much sleep

Our main concern is that its a bit too ambitious.
Please feel free to comment.

Thanks a lot!

I am just trying to arrange you itinerary:
Mumbai-Jodhpur-Jaisalmer-Jodhpur-Pushkar-Jaipur-Agra-Delhi-Varanasi-Bodhgaya-Kolkata-Darjeeling-Kolkata-Chennai-Pondicherry

It will pretty hectic mind it
From Kolkata you can visit Shantiniketan , Malda and Sunderbans. Our member Somnath wrote about his trip to Sunderbans which you can refer.

Too many places for two months, out of which 10 days are in Goa/Mumbai.

Suggest knock out a few non-priority ones.

I think it is doable. Reduce a couple of days from Goa.

Spend your beach days at Mamallapuram (outside Chennai) and on your way back to Mumbai, spend a couple of days to see the caves at Ajanta and Ellora.

You definitely won't be getting much sleep or relaxation. This is the sort of itinerary that makes my head spin.

It's not really what I'd characterize as 'most of India'. In the South you will be passing many worthwhile sites while traveling long distances between your selected destinations.

Thanks a lot people.

We might leave out some of the southern bits like Chennai Pondicherry and do them next year.

Will that make it better?

makes sense to me.

i tend to think of south india as an entirely different region worth exploring on it's own, rather than as an add on.

Much better

When I read your orignal post the first time, it sounded good except for these places and Madurai.

Though singsub has a point, if you prefer to squeeze the time out of Goa/Mumbai, you could do these. But it will be rushed and tiring. Unless you prefer a very hectic trip, it is better to leave these for next time.
