Most of my enjoyable journeys have been in the Himalayas but there is one that is extra special
Several years ago, when I had just started working and got my first car which was picked up from the dealership on a friday evening We were quite excited and the lady decided to drop in, and we eventually took off for a long spin with an undecided itinerary at 4 in the morning We eventually landed up in Chail (Himachal Pradesh)..some 350 odd kms away ![]() There is a rather narrow but almost zero traffic road which bifurcates from the Shimla highway at a place called Kandaghat The road passes via some fairly dense deodar/pine forests and has a couple of lone chai shops along the way We took so many stops , it took us nearly the same time to reach Chail from Kandaghat (65 kms) that it took us from Delhi to Kandaghat (300+) ![]()

Siliguri to Darjeeling Toy Train
My favourite journey has to be the narrow gauge(Toy Train) from Siliguri to Darjeeling. I have been on this twice now, my dad took my 28 years ago when I was 10 and a had such vivid memories that I just had to go back so I did this and took my mum this time, I think we went in '98 and again was a great trip. Just seeing the train pull in at Siliguri was amazing, the people on the train we so friendly, offered us japati's for breakfast and very chatty. The scenery is just amazing as the train winds its way up the hills. Unfortunatly Darjeeling seems to have turned busy and full of tourists now and weather was cloudy so didnt really get to see Kanchanjunga mountain(3rd hightest).
Will get to to the Shimla and Ooty train journey's one day. |

Train Kovalam to New Delhi.
It was wicked to watch the nature change from coconut palms to palms and eventually trees,to sit by the open door, with legs outside the train and delicious meals would just be brought to you ![]() |

not really DW
as long as you keep your legs on or above the first ladder rung ya, ya... bad advice... i know This is an interesting thread... thought i'll add one of my own... I was 14 and already in love with trains and travelling... Decided to give Rajasthan a try in october starting from Delhi... since i was travelling alone (and young), i decided not to stay in any hotel and to take all overnight trains.... Planned route was Delhi-Jodhpur-Jaisalmer-Jodhpur-Mt Abu-Jaipur-Delhi... The trip went better than expected... really loved the Mehranagarh fort in Jodhpur, Sam village in Jaisalmer, Deelwara temples in Mt. Abu and City Palace in Jaipur... it was a 5day/6night trip and i thoroughly enjoyed the independance... The tantrums i had to throw to convince my parents are another story but i gained their confidence with that trip and life was more travelsome after that ![]() |

Me too ! Mehrangarh is the most impressive fort that I have visited till now. The museum is superbly maintained.
Sam village....appeared like a bollywood flim set to me...We went to Tanot, and the sand dunes were huge.....a real thar desert experience. Dilwara temples are awesome......just canopies from outside and what a craftsmanship inside....... |

Tanot is the farthest point you can go upto on Jaisalmer Pakistan Border....You hire a car from Jaisalmer and it's a very scenic day trip.....Sand Dunes on your way are so huge. and so beautiful....You'll feel like lawrece of Arabia......
Sam is no where...in comparison...... |

For me though visited quite a numberful palces, qualitively i rememeber Shillong-Cherrapunji visit was one of my enjoyable trip. The pictursque was awesome. I remember driving along clouds over the hilly terrain. The Bangladesh plains from immense height of Thangkharang Park.
The period was September - October. Simple culture, nice peoples, very safe, beautiful surrounding...n so more. |

No major improvements to the road, humunguous traffic jams, squealing, cavorting, plain noisy tourists, and what have you! Indeed memorable! During off season is what I suspect you were fondly remembering! And at such times it is indeed a lovely journey. ![]() |
