Another favorite was a regular train ride. i don't remember for sure which train it was, but i think it was from NJP to Patna. It was early morning, just around or before dawn and I was kind of awake but in a sort of trance that was sustained by the rythmic noises of the slow moving train. From a distance, as we slowly headed toward a stop, I heard many human voices, which all seemed to be chanting in a low murmer that sounded so sublimely beautiful with the sound of the train and my extremely peaceful state of mind. The sound become louder and the train moved slower until we pulled into the station and i realized it was not a religious noise that i was hearing but just the dull roar of the people at the stop, and the chanting morphed into "chai, chai coffee chai" and i had to laugh. I'm hard of hearing which has something to do with it, but I thought it was funny that almost anything can sound holy from a distance in india!
I don't know if this is to do with your hearing, I've experienced this many times, I think it's because I rarely fall into a deep sleep on the trains, I'm always half awake and have had many wonderful 'dreams' where I wake up, half dazed to the sound of voices slowly becoming louder, just like you describe above, It's a wonderful noise, you just know chai & breakfast are waiting on the platform for you.

My favourite journey was on AI131 from London to Mumbai. travelling with wife and children. My 12 year old has developed a sarcastic tone to everything he has to say and boy he does say it well. Luckily or unluckily for us a posse of boys and girls (about 50 of them) occupying a few rows ahead turned out to be bollywood extras returning from an extended shooting schedule on the streets of glasgow and london. After the 25th rendition of 'mumbai say aaya mera dost', our 12 year old parasite could hack it no longer and broke out into a falsetto rendition of 'Jerusalem'. Unfortunately for him, no one knew the words so no one could join in and when one of the cast asked him for the words he was stumped. he could not believe that they actually wanted to learn the song and join in. By the time he had finished with them i was on my 6th vodka tonic so dont know how it ended. The mrs says she got a few marriage proposals for him.

My favorite bus journey was from Bangalore to Mysore in bus in early 90s. It was a so called video coach, with shaky video and questionable sound. Wife kept waking me up to watch the Bollywood number which was playing. I guess her motto was why should she suffer the movie alone! I bet that was her revenge for the train episode mensioned earlier! Bus stopped for dinner at a place. Ordered a thali, supposedly unlimited rice, but the waiter was not impressed with our requests for refills. At the end of the meal, incredulously he asked for a tip, and he got earful.

Overall a most satisfying journey

My most enjoyable trip has to be Siliguri to Darjeeling by Jeep thru those wonderful tea estates and then the return journey from Siliguri to Durgapur by bus back in 1997.

2 maniac drivers and a bus load of frightened people, every second was a bonus. From the time the bus entered a village / town by the road, the hand was on the horn, it was as if the brakes did not function. I survived and reached safely, also that it was my first trip as a solo traveler and thats what makes it so very special.

Hi. Please help. I'm trying to squeeze in Khajuraho visit during my 2 days in Varanasi. Is it possible to take a day trip to Khajuraho from Varanasi then catch a sleeper train to Agra at night? What transportation mode is most advisable?

Khajuraho can't be squeezed in . . .

it's over ten hours by car from Varanasi. And, there are no trains to be caught in Khajuraho. Khajuraho to Agra by car is over ten hours as well.

Smile Cavelossim to Agonda

On a scooter....

We hire a scooter when we get to Goa, Cavelossim and set off all over to explore.

My fave trip is the one to Agonda. Over the ferry on the river Sal and along the coast road. Up hills and down again the scenery is amazing and we saw monkeys and cows wandering the roads. We came accross road workers laying electric cables and had to wait while they moved out of the way and chatted and passed sweets to the children. We got lost loads of times and once ended up in a families back yard much to thier amusment and surprise. We passed fish drying along the road side and fisher men sorting thier nets out who waved and smiled as we whizzed past. Capo de Rama was good for a spot to explore and wander around, the views of the coast from there are great and the spooky ruins with monkeys calling made a nice break from the uncomfy bike.
We stopped for a kingfisher in one on the bars along the way. Further on we wanted to stick to the coast as close as we could and ended up going along a road which was a dead end which the local children knew..so when we came back they were waiting and shouting in the street for us to stop. So we did and shared some more sweets and one spotted my bottle of fanta and asked if he could have it, I duly handed it over and there was nearly a street brawl over it so I gave them another one. They all were so sweet and polite it was lovely to meet them, thier mums came out to tell them to leave us alone but when they saw we were happy to chat joined in and offered us a drink in thier home. So we left the scooter (being examined closely by the children)and went and sat down with them. This was the first time we had properly met locals and it was the best time of the holiday.
We carried on after a while and arrived at Agonda after about 3 hours, its about a 30 mins trip by taxi, but we had the best time and knew we could do it all again on they way back....
We passed through Khola and a crow landed on the wires and electrocuted itself, there were lots of people waiting for a bus siting underneath and the loud bang and sparks sent everyone scattering and laughing...that was the strangest thing I had ever seen. The smell of burnt feathers was awful.

All my firsts were probably the most enjoyable - train, auto rickshaw, rickshaw, etc. Walking along the streets of khajuraho and Varanasi on a nice warm weather is also a nice experience.

Delhi to Amritsar early on a Sunday morning. I was so tired, yet stayed awake, not wanting to miss a trick. Could'nt believe the amount of people on the trackside doing the toilet...And the amount of kites flying from the rooftops...

Flying out of Srinagar to Delhi. It was a mostly clear day, just a few shreds of clouds. Climbing up out of the valley and seeing just how massive the snow covered peaks enclosing it are was totally astonishing.

The first trip, the dawn caught up with us as we were just at the highest part of our trajectory, starting to descend over the China Sea. It was completely clear, the water and sky were just a different shade of blue, the shadows of night moving off to the right. I could see that the earth below was a globe. Have looked for it again every other trip but it has always been cloudy.

It's an old tradition, you have to fly a kite from your rooftop to let others know you're on your way to the rail tracks to perform your morning motions.
