Hi Friends,

I am planning to go on a road trip from Delhi to Leh in July, the itenerary is as below:
Day 1 (8th July '12): Delhi to Chandigarh
Day 2 (9th July '12): Chandigarh to Solang valley
Day 3 (10th July '12): Solang to Jispa
Day 4 (11th July '12): Jispa to Sarchu
Day 5 (12th July '12): Sarchu to Leh
Day 6 (13th July '12): Leh to Pangong Tso and back to Leh
Day 7 (14th July '12): Leh to Kargil
Day 8 (15th July '12): Kargil to Srinagar
Day 9 (16th July '12): Srinagar to Jammu
Day 10 (17th July '12): Jammu to Ludhiana
Day 11 (18th July '12): Ludhiana to Delhi
Extra two days in buffer

Dear amateur riders,
1) please let me know if the above plan is ok and is July good time to travel via these roads?
2) I also have plan B, which will be going from Manali to Leh and coming back on the same route. which of these would be better?
3) Can we do Leh-Pangong Tso-Leh in one day?
4 What is the best route via Srinagar and places to stay in Leh Srinigar Delhi route?

Thanks,
Sunil

Can you do it other way round, entering Leh from Kargil and returning via Manali? This will help you acclimatize better. In fact from Pangong Tso, you can drive towards Tso Moriri and then onto Manali without coming back to Leh.

Where in solang do you plan to stay? I do not think it has any homestays or hotels. Might be wrong on this.

Day 3 (10th July '12): Solang to Jispa
Day 4 (11th July '12): Jispa to Sarchu
Day 5 (12th July '12): Sarchu to Leh
Day 6 (13th July '12): Leh to Pangong Tso and back to Leh
day 6 is not possible
Day 7 (14th July '12): Leh to Kargil
Day 8 (15th July '12): Kargil to Srinagar
Day 9 (16th July '12): Srinagar to Jammu
Day 10 (17th July '12): Jammu to Ludhiana

the road should be open by 2nd week of june as per latest discussions on the road status thread.

2) I also have plan B, which will be going from Manali to Leh and coming back on the same route. which of these would be better?

NO

4 What is the best route via Srinagar and places to stay in Leh Srinigar Delhi route?

What do you mean by this? best route as in?
You can halt at Mulbek or kargil and then reach Srinagar for a night halt.

Thanks,
Sunil
My comments in bold.

Plus why are you going to Leh?

You cannot do pangong tso in a day and you do not have Nubra in the plan nor do I see Zanskar?

Are you sure you have done your research of the place?
Bike rides - Kashmir to Leh and Sikkim, Jungle safaris - Corbett,Chikhaldara, Kanha and Gorumara. Traveled through MP, Himachal, J&K, Maharashtra, W.Bengal, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Goa, Karnataka, AP . . . Yet feel so New to traveling in India.

What road is expected to open in second week July? Both roads to Ladakh always open in May or June. There can be weather events that cause closure for a few days in any open month but they haven't stayed closed till July for years now. If you're talking about roads to Solang and Jispa then maybe, I don't know about those.

Leh Pangong Leh is commonly done in taxis by Indian tourists, though it can mean spending all day on the road, and less than an hour at the lake. Personally I don't understand the appeal of such a trip but maybe that's what you want to spend your time doing.

Your itinerary doesn't have time for Nubra or Zangskar so that's fine to leave them out.

Manali to Leh Road Trip

Hi All,

Thanks fo your valuable suggestions. I would like to clarify that we would be travelling from Leh to Pangong Tso in a local Taxi hired at Leh. I couldn't add Nubra valley into the itenerary as we have a limited time leave approved by our company. I am very much keen to more places around Leh, but my friends are not ready to spend some extra time due to month end activities at their work.
We also have two days as buffer, so, I think that we can use this to rest at Leh and get our bikes serviced. By the way, we have bought 4 new Unicorn bikes one month back for this trip.

Thanks,
Sunil

Unicorn is an amazing bike, Infact We did our leh ride on unicorns.

The ups - Did not give any problems at all, the only time it stalled was in a huge puddle of water due to heavy rains in some small village from manali- chandigarh. The motorcycle started in 10 minutes of stalling. It also was possible to move the motorcycle in the slush of rohtang , due to its lighter weight, while the enfields got stuck in the slush.

The downs - The pillions had a hard time. But then that would be with any bike.

All the best !

Thanks NT,

Good to hear that Unicorn is an amazing bike on this trip. I have a question to you again.
Could you please let me know the cost of accomodation at Manali, Jispa, Sarchu, and Leh?

Thanks,
Sunil

I hope you also looked at the downsides and will take necessary precautions.

We did not stay in Manali/Jispa/sarchu and in leh we started for around 500-600 for 3.
You should be able to find accomodation in 500-1000 everywhere. The pang tents actually charged us INR 100 per person.

Hi NT,

Could you please suggest the route from Leh to Delhi via Srinagar and also places to stay on this route? we are planning to return via srinagar route, so would highly appreciate your earliest response.

**Updating as rechecked your OP -

What we did -
We took the Pune Jammu train which landed us in Jammu in the morning and we had a lunch a friends relative and hence we could start only around 2 from jammu and take a night halt at Patni top.

If you not halting in srinagar then you should ideally take 3 long days from jammu if you start early from jammu on day 1.

So day 1 - Jammu to srinagar
Day 2 Srinagar to Kargil
Day 3 Kargil to leh

Now this is just a rough plan, we stayed in sonmarg so we got a early start for the mighty zozilla and we also did not stay in kargil and chose mulbek.

About reaching to jammu from delhi, I think you need to figuire out on when you start from delhi. I will not be able to comment on this.
