Hi there,

I will be in Maharashtra this Nov. Below is a list of places I intend to visit over 4 to 5 weeks. Am I missing any must-see place in the state? Should I skip any of the places listed below? Please advice

5 Days - Mumbai (incl. Elephanta Island)
3 Days - Alibag, Murud-Janjira
2 Days - Ganpathiphule (day trip to ratnagiri)
2 Days - Kolhapur (day trip to Panhala fort)
2 Days - Mahabaleshwar (visit Pratapgarh/Raigarh fort?)
3 Days - Pune
2 Days - Lonavla (incl. Khandala and visits to caves)
2 Days - Matheran
3 Days - Nasik (incl. Trimbakeshwar, shirdi)
5 Days - Aurangabad (incl. Daulatabad, Ellora, Ajanta)
1 Day - Lonar

What do you think?

5 days in Mumbai and 3 days in Pune is too high. May be you can extend the stay in Lonavala / Mahabaleshwar / Matheran.

But you will be constantly only the move..

Don't know if you have been to Mumbai before but it can be a lot to swallow especially as a first destination. If you are departing from Mumbai consider spending a day there at the beginning and then another one or two days at the end. That way you also don't have a mad rush back to catch a flight etc...
Jai Hind.

Hey 4Sama. I am a 25 year old canadian male going to india for the first time. I am flying into mumbai in the beggining of October! then headed to Pune for a week or two then travelling north. It would be awesome to meet up and see a few places together. I've never been to india so it will be quite alot to take in and would be awesome to have another tourist to see a few places with and rely on. Drop me a line and let me know what your plans are!

You are covering heritage caves, beaches, hill stations, temples, forts etc., I think your itinerary is fine. You may have to add or remove days in a couple of places.
How are you planning to travel?

Rajered, we will be driving around. We have family in Bombay from where we'll pick the car and then drive to the other towns.

Hmmm ... it does sound like 5 days is a lot for Mumbai. Will try to reduce it to 3 and add more days in Lonavla/Matheran/Mahabaleshwar as suggested...

It would be advisable if another person who knows driving is with you. For a single person it would be too strenous.

This could be a possible itinerary.

Mumbai - Alibag around 108 kms
Alibag - Murud Janjira around 42 kms
Murud Janjira - Mumbai around 160 kms
Mumbai - Raigad - Ganpatipule around 380 kms
Ganpatipule - Kolhapur around 144 kms
Kolhapur - Mahabaleshwar around 170 kms
Mahabaleshwar - Pune around 120 kms
Pune - Lonavala - Khandala - Pune
Pune - Aurangabad around 215 kms
Aurangabad - Shirdi around 136 kms
Shirdi - Nasik around 90 kms
Nasik - Bhandardara around 80 kms
Bhandaradara - Mumbai around 180 kms

It could be fine tuned further.

My suggestions on rajerd's plan

leave Mumbai morning - reach alibag Alibag afternoon around 108 kms. relax and spend 1 night.
leave Alibag @ 9 a.m. - reach Murud Janjira @ 10.30 around 42 kms
spend 1 night
leave Murud Janjira @ 8 a.m. - reach Ganpatipule @ 11.30 around 150 kms (no need to go to mumbai)spend 1 night.
leave Ganpatipule @ 9 A.m. - reach Kolhapur @ 12.30 around 144 kms. Spend 2 days n cover mahalaxmi temple, panhala, city tour etc.
leave Kolhapur @ 8 a.m. - reach Mahabaleshwar @ 10.30 around 170 kms via satara - medha - mahabaleshwar road. spend2 nights.( and cover city tour, pratapgad etc. don't cover pachgani here)
leave Mahabaleshwar @ 8 a.m. - reach Pune @ 11.30 around 120 kms (cover pachgani while going to pune)spend 2 days in pune and cover 2/3 ashtavinayak, shaniwarwada, pune city tour etc.
leave Pune @ 8 a.m. - reach Aurangabad @ 1 p.m. around 215 kms spend 2 nights and cover ellora, city tour etc
leave Aurangabad @ 8 a.m. - reach Shirdi 11 a.m. around 136 kms. spend 1 night cover shani shingnapur on the way.
Shirdi - Nasik around 90 kms
Nasik - Bhandardara around 80 kms spend 1 night
Bhandaradara - Mumbai around 180 kms
leave mumbai @ 8 a.m. - reach matheran @ 11 a.m. 100 kms spend 1 night

avoid going to lonawala bcos once u see mahabaleshwar lonawala will be worst to see. not much points to see and very crowded by mumbai people.

In my opinion as a Mumbai resident, there is nothing to see for 5 whole days which could better be spent in more pleasant surroundings, unless you have somthing specific in mind. You could reduce 2-3 days easily. Elephanta is a half day trip max. You may be disappointed if you compare it with Ajanta / Ellora, but the ride across the harbour is very pleasant and the main cave is nice. Also do a trip to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Kanheri caves at Borivili, the location is in the middle of a dense forest.

Between Alibag, Murud Janjira and Ganpathipule, they are all beaches. It may be better to spend all that combined time at Ganpatipule which is the best beach and you can also do a side trip to nearby Ratnagiri and even to the Sindhudurg sea fort a bit further, this is much better than the Janjira fort, and the Malvan region is a lot nicer than the beaches closer to Mumbai.

Spend more time at Mahabaleshwar or Matheran or Bhandardhara and completely avoid Lonavala / Khandala which you will pass anyway from Pune to Mumbai. M'shwar, Matheran and Bhandardhara are all hill stations. M'shwar and Bhandardhara are at about the same altitude, Matheran is lower. Bhandardhara is right on the huge Arthur lake and will probably be the quietest. It is a relatively easy hike to Mount Kalsubai from near here, which is the highest peak in Maharashtra.

Here again, you could spend more quality time at any one hill station instead of a few days at each.

The rest sounds fine. November is a very pleasant month in Maharashtra.
