If you don't want to do anything in between, you should take the (night)train! E.g. the 727 to trivandrum and then a taxi or bus on to kovalam.
Did you consider Varkala? Also a nice beach and a bit less touristy. Hans

Normal route from Madurai to Trivandrum is via NH 7 via Virudhunagar-Tirunelveli , Nagercoil and you won't see much scenery in this road. If you prefer Scenic Drive, you could try out the following:
Madurai - Tirumangalam- Srivilliputhur-Rajapalayam-Tenkasi-Courtallam-Senkottah-Trivandrum (This is NH 208 which actually runs from Madurai to Kollam and For Trivandrum you will take a left after Thenmala) but run thru a Picturesque route . Road is really good upto Shenkottah and followed by bad patches in the Ghat road , followed by good road upto Trivandrum. Srivilliputhur Temple - is big and Architecturally good and Tamilnadu government Emblem itself is Main Gopuram of this temple Tenkasi Sivan Temple - Exceptionally big temple and it's very sacred and considered as "South Varanasi Courtallam - Exceptionally beautiful waterfalls (If you want more info,I can post) Thenmala - From Shencottah , when you climb up the ghat road , you will reach this place and it's a nature lover's paradise (http://www.thenmalaecotourism.com/) And once after Tirumangalam , all along you can see the mighty western ghats at your right and this will be a nice drive. If you compare to the proper Route (NH 7 Vs NH 208) ,I would say this might be equal or 10 to 20 kms more BUT this is worth a try . If you take the travelling time, Definitely , the second route which I suggest will take atleast 3 hours more than the NH7 route. For making this journey, car is ideal and an early start from Madurai is preferred. If you need more info on any of the above, feel free to post And I am not sure about the Car / Driver cost as I did this route in Bus & Train.. Hope this helps. |
