loved McCleod Ganj...so where to now?

here there all! I visited India 3 yrs ago, became an Indiaphile after visiting Rajasthan, Delhi, Varanasi, Agra, Manali...but my favourite place was McCleod Ganj.

I am into buddhism, so stayed in a monastery there for a while, hiked up into the mountains, enjoyed the people, the market....just the general vibe.

Now I am going back for 6 weeks Dec/Jan...but feel like going to other places I have not been to yet. Thinking of Sikkim....is it as wonderful as I imagine it to be? I love mountains, peace, calm, Buddhist culture, snow, lakes, photography. Trekking too. Also, I don't have lots of money. $30 per day max, and a little more when trekking with a company.

Ladakh is out obviously, as I can only go end of the yr. So....suggestions please! Is Sikkim the place for me?

Otherwise, where else?

Sikkim is a great area! You can visit Gangtok..kalingpong etc very beautiful area.Otherwise Utranchal is also fab it has everything you mentioned but no budhisim!

December and January are good times to visit Sikkim. There's relatively little rain that late in the year and the views are spectacular. There are also lots of festivals during December and January. If you are interested in Buddhism and loved McLeod Ganj, you'll go crazy over Sikkim.

Sikkim is breathtaking. Quite different than Mcleod Gang and less commercial. The people were fantastic. Can be quite cold there at that time of year, especially up north. Also Darjeeling is very much worth a trip on your way to Sikkim. At the time I was there you could take a trip from Gangtok to one of the border towns in Bhutan. I'm not sure if that is still possible.

So is Dec-Jan high season then? What are the rates like for budget double rooms at that time? Is it crowded(relatively speaking!)?
