Love North but now it's time for the South
We have been to the North twice and loved it...Our 3rd trip including Ajanta caves, Bhuj, Bundy. Chittiough,Mumbai and Jaipur. We are an active 60's couple who love Indian culture, the sights and local markets...oh and the food is pretty darn good too!
Now it's time to explore the south and I'm driving myself CRazzzzy. What do you think of this?? January 15th arrive Chennai: Day 2 & 3 Madurai Day 4 & 5: Chettinad Day 6 & 7 & Trichy Swamimalai Day 8 Thanjavur Day 9 & 10: Tranquebar Day 11: Mahabalipuram Day 12: Alleppey Day 13: Houseboat - Maybe 2 nights? Day 14: Alleppey: Any suggestions would be Greatly appreciated! |

Your direction is not optimal........
Start from Chennai ........go through to Madurai and then move from thereon to Alleppey.... Given the kind of places you have indicated to be of interest in Tamil Nadu, there is quite a bit in Kerala you would miss by directly heading to Alleppey. Possibly you have time constraints......I would be tempted to suggest - explore a little more of Tamil Nadu for the extra 2 days .....and plan for one more trip to Kerala at a later time. ribhu |

After Madurai you could slip into Periyar(Thekady) area and then Allepey after that. As far as driving yourself, you hit the nail on the head,"crazy" vandy ![]() |

Thank you both. Guess it's back to the drawing board. Ribhu, I agree regarding Tamil Nadu but my husband is so exciting to do the houseboat trip for at least a day. Do you have any suggestions?
Vandy, My husband loves to drive but yes it would be crazy to drive in India. I meant I was driving myself crazy trying to make a decision... so crazy that I had a bad itinerary. |

In which case, I would suggest that you should start from Chennai......travel through to Madurai.......drop Chettinad
and head to alleppey from madurai... That will make your trip that extra bit enjoyable and reduce the strain of continuous travel and also give you some buffers. ribhu |

not sure whether thanjavur is only a small detour from the madurai chennai route (as it is via railways)...if so, thanjavur definitely worth a visit
as already suggested, you can go to thekkady on the way from madurai to allepy ...it is in the border region between kerala and tamil nadu ( east end of kerala)while allepy will be on the west end. |
