Leh to Bhubaneswar Help
I'll be in Leh early July and i need to get to Puri by July 16th.
Would it take upwards of a week to make this journey without a flight? Would it be faster to get a flight from leh to delhi then take a train to puri or get down to delhi by bus and take a plane to bhubaneswar? |

Shortest route
If you can take a flight from Leh to Delhi and from Delhi to Bhubaneshwar, you would be there in a jiffy.
But if you were to choose between these two flights, I would say that Delhi to Bhubaneshwar (BBSR) would be better as it is the longer leg of the journey. If you do decide to take a train, take the Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani express, which takes about 32 hours to get you in BBSR from where you can take a further 2 hour train to Puri, or a 3 hour bus to Puri. |

The Rajdhanis have been speeded up, 23-24.5 hours for the Delhi-Bhubaneshwar trip now.
Leh to Delhi = 1000kms by bus (20-24 hours??? I've no idea) Delhi to Bhubaneshwar = 2000kms (24 hours by train) No competition. (well, not for me) But it may depend on other things. How will you be getting to Leh? If overland, the flight back to Delhi might appeal (does the change in altitude give problems when coming down?). Are any of the flight routes covered by a budget carrier? You could take 4 days to get from Leh to Delhi, then get the train and comfortably get from Leh to Puri in a week, this may also allow you to travel in a high class on the Rajdhani.

thanks for the well thought replies...it really is a hard decision. I'm leaning toward a flight from leh to delhi because i might be dreading the bus journey back down compared to a train ride. Although i havent looked around too much, so far the cheapest option ive found for leh to delhi one way is jet airways at 204USD. It really does seem a bit high, especially since most people will be going up there and not down but oh well. Also, what is it like going down in altitude quickly compared to up?

If they only had a Leh to Bhubaneshwar flight....wow i'd be made. Or what about a direct Rath Yatra flight from all major cities.

I'd guess you're going overland from Shrinagar to Leh??
I'd be very, very tempted to buy a 2nd hand motorbike in Srinagar and use it to get to Leh, then down to Delhi, then in Delhi either sell it or give it away. Just a thought..... You say it's peak time heading up to Leh, will some people hire a taxi to take them to Leh? I bet you could get a good price for that same cab making his return journey to Chandigarh or Delhi, but this is a real long shot. If you're already worried about the bus trip back from Leh, book a flight, I beleive there are also flights to Chandigarh from Leh (or there used to be), have you checked the prices? |

Guess it depends which you value more: breathtaking views or comfort.
The views on the Leh - Manali route are amazing if you're prepared to rough it in bus or jeep. It's one of those quintessential road trips and thoroughly enjoyable if you can put up with a few aches and pains. However if you are in Ladakh for a while and especially if you're doing some trekking there you might have had your fill of breathtaking views - sounds hard to believe but the WOW factor of Ladakh's landscape can give over to a quiet acceptance after some time. Since you have a specific destination (and deadline!) to head to you might just want to get there with a minimum of fuss, in which case the flight/train option would suit better - make sure you've got a good book at hand! Not sure this will help you draw any conclusions ... but that's my 2 cents. BTW: I've never experienced any altitude adjustment difficulties on the way down. |

hey thanks, well ill be taking the bus up and although comfort isnt my top priority, getting to puri effeciently is. It would be a drag to fall in love with the leh-manali journey and not be about to take it back down though........
