It is very difficult for foreigners to comment on your driving plans, as those of us who have visited these sites mostly take trains to get there. And perhaps the Indian members here have little interest in Buddhist sites or for other reasons cannot answer your questions.

If you scroll to the bottom of this page, there are links to recent discussions that include these sites and maybe you will get some information.

And if you have SPECIFIC questions, please ask again.

You can drive from Kolkata to BodhGaya in one day if you start early enough. Stay in Bodhgaya for a day or two. Drive to Nalanda stay there for a day. Drive from Nalanda to Varanasi. Stay In Varanasi. You can do a day trip to Sarnath.

Varanasi back to Kolkata in a day is doable but a loooong drive.
Would recommend stopping at Asansol or closeby.

NH2 is great for the most part. With some rough patches in between. It is a fantastic drive. Just avoid driving at night.

BodhGaya has a ton of hotels so dont worry too much. Varanasi, i would personally recommend Sahi River View Guest House if you get a chance.
