Khajuraho to Jhansi
This is my first visit to India. Only 12 days with a tight schedule. I am going to fly to Varanasi and then to Khajuraho and then on land to Agra.
Is there good bus service? Should I stay in Orcha or Jhansi? Approximate distance between Khajuraho and Orcha and Jhansi. How long is the bus trip? How would I find bus schedules? Thanks Last edited by dleeone1 : Oct 21st, 2005 at 22:56. |

Without a doubt, you should stay in Orchha. It's a beautiful village and apart from the train station, Jhansi has very little to offer. I believe it's only about 150km from Khajuraho and there are plenty of buses.

I'll secind that stay in Orchha a much better choice than Jhansi!! The bus takes around four hours to reach Jhansi from Kajuraho.
Ask the driver to drop you of at the Orccha junction the bus goes past it on the way to Jhansi and there are always a few rickshaws and shared tempos hanging around in this spot! |

Noone's answered dleeone1's last little question, which I am also interested in:
where can we find bus schedules? Can I also add, how do we book buses - first come, first served or is it like booking a train (oh please please say it isn't so )Cheers F.

You can buy tickets up front for some buses, others will operate on a first come first served basis!
Nothing like the waiting time to book a ticket though, it's realtively painless. Bus schedules tend to be rather flexible, ask at your hotel they will be able to tell you when the buses depart or head down to the bus station and ask there. If you get to the main highway at Bamitha there are loads of buses heading this way! |

Thanks for the help. A few questions:
How long (time) of a bus ride from Orchha to Jhansi?
Bamitha is how far from Khajuraho? Do I take a bus or autorickshaw? How do I tell the difference from an express bus and a local bus. Is there a bus line that has the most comfortable buses or am I forgetting where I am going? OT If I am waitng for a train that I have bought aticket and it is late. Another train comes that is going to the same place. Can I use the ticket for the 1st train on the second train? I assume not but..... David |

How long (time) of a bus ride from Orchha to Jhansi?
1/2 an hour Bamitha is how far from Khajuraho? Do I take a bus or autorickshaw? 11 kms bus or rickshaw How do I tell the difference from an express bus and a local bus. Express buses are generally better with push back seats in a 2 x2 configuration local buses have bench like seats in a 3 x2 configuration! Ask the locals they will set you straight Is there a bus line that has the most comfortable buses or am I forgetting where I am going? Again ask the locals they will get you on the best bus but don't expect huge differences OT If I am waitng for a train that I have bought a ticket and it is late. Another train comes that is going to the same place. Can I use the ticket for the 1st train on the second train? I assume not but..... No your ticket is only valid for the train stated on your ticket Last edited by cyberhippie : May 4th, 2007 at 05:07. Reason: wrong info |

I tried to ask this question last night but the site was being fixed, so here goes today .... !
If a train runs every day of the week and you buy a ticket for example, for Monday, can you then use this ticket to take said train on another day instead? For example, if plans go a bit awry, if you decide to stay longer in a city etc ... ? Or would a completely new ticket have to be issued if you decide to travel on the Tuesday instead of Monday? I will be booking 3 overnighters next week and just want to know if it would be possible to rearrange the days etc. Cheers F. |

If you're flying internally, then perhaps your not so much on a tight budget. You can organise a car from Khajaraho to Orccha. We shopped around and I think the cheapest we found was 1500Rs (don't quote me). I think we ended up going with the attached travel agent to the restaurant with the little treehouse (opposite the main temples).
It only took about 2.5 hours instead of 4, and when we overtook a few miserable looking travellers next to a broken down bus we couldn't help but be glad that we had the ambassador. |

best hotel in Jhansi is Hotel Sita. all the rickshaw drivers know it
Things to do in Jhansi: great fort internet cafe in the middle of a slaughterhouse atmospheric cemetery full of mutiny graves in cantonment ![]() Got asked many times by Tempo drivers if we wanted to go to Orcha, so I think it's easy to get there, and it's surely NOT foru hours travel time, lolololol. more like 30 minutes

That's four hours from Khajuraho that they were talking about and not from Jhansi which is about 30 minutes!!! And the best place to be in is at Orchha and not Jhansi which can also be seen on a day trip from Orchha if you wish or on the way to anywhere else from Orchha as Jhansi is the nearest railhead from Orchha. We did the same when we were in Orchha and saw Jhansi (the fort and art museum) on the last day when leaving by train from Jhansi to Mumbai. We spent four days in Orchha looking around at all the beautiful structures and monuments and the famous chattris (cenotaphs) and the temples with the painted ceilings!!! There are a lot of vultures, parakeets (parrots) and monkeys in most of these places so be careful of the monkeys as they just snatch any foodstuff you may have in your hands!!! The Sheesh Mahal hotel is the best place to stay in if you want luxury at a cheap price as it is also the main palace of Orchha!!! But if you are on a budget then one of the small guest houses near the temple are very cheap at about Rs150 to 200 per night for a double room. There are three buses from Khajuraho to Orchha Junction (drop off point) which are of two types --- one is a luxury bus (Rs95 or 2USD) and the other two are normal buses (much cheaper than the so called luxury bus) but the luxury bus is no better than the normal ones so just take any of them and you will be fine. Then take the shared tempo or autorickshaw for Rs10 per person from the Orchha junction. The first bus is in the morning at about 7 or 8am and the second at 11 am and the third in the evening at about 5pm and the travelling time is just four hours with another 15 minutes for reaching Orchha village from the junction. The bus station at Khajuraho will have the exact timings and fares and also no need to buy the tickets in advance as they can even be bought on the bus. But it is better to buy them when the bus comes into the station as you get the best seats in the front of the bus. The conductor of the bus will issue the tickets with the seat numbers on it. Hope this helps. Cheers, Aadil.
