We are attending a wedding in Trivendrum Sept 4. We will be in Trivendrum from Sept 1-6. We will then go to Maldives and then be back in Kerala Sept 13-16, leaving from TRV. And will have some free time off and on. I have spent time all over India but never West Ghat or south.

We had thought about going to Puiyar Tiger Reserve on the last days.

With all that being said, while in Trivendrum, what are the things we should do? If we have a couple of extra days together, what you recommend doing? Love nature and being outdoors and would love to see Elephants. But not in a zoo and not chained up.

Thank you for all of your assistance.

Read Trivandrum and Kanyakumari for some idea of what to do around Trivandrum.

I would recommend a day trip to Kanyakumari seeing the Padmanabhapuram Palace / Museum on the way. The palace will be closed on a Monday.

For elephants you might have to go to the northern part.

Go to Poovar beach either on the way to Kanyakumari - a long day in store, or go to poovar independently from Trivendrum.
Would recommend stay at Kovalam beach while staying at Trivendrum - either entire or part of the stay.
For Periyar - It is a entire day travel one way to reach Thekkady - there you can go for boat ride in lake, have a day excursion - hiking in the forest. BUT your dates make it impossible to visit the Tiger reserve. All reserve forests in India are closed from 15th June to 15th October. So going all the way to Thekkady may not be really worthwhile then.
There are many elephant camps, lets see if someone can get one near Trivendrum. Here the elephants are given bath, visitors can take part in it as well. Is fun. The elephants are not free but not tied up at all times either.
Trivendrum has got many attractions, Kanyakumari is a day trip from there - should be done. Poovar beach is a nice spot to visit as well.

1 . You could include "Early morning" walk in "Shangumugam beach". This is very close to airport . It is very nice beach. In the evenings this beach is "super crowded" and all our morning impression got reversed in the evening.
2. You could add a "Day journey" to Ponmudi . A Super nice Small hillet with pin drop silence with nothing much to do except walking and enjoying the scenery and Greens around. This place will have nice climate with occassional mists and we enjoyed the "Super silence" and the different pathways in different directions each offering different views. The Route to Ponmudi itself will be very scenic.
3. Browse the local newspaper once you are in trivandrum and there will be some event or other which might interest you. When we visited, there was "Flower show", "book show" and some "General Exhibition kind of stall galore".
4. Plan out a evening Visit to "Attugal bhagavathi temple". This temple organizes Bharathanatyam/ Vocal/Classical songs etc(Free) in the temple premises and when we visited there was a Fantastic "Bharathanatyam show" performed by group of kids and it was very very nice . With around 20-25 audience , the kids did amazing show for close to 2 hours and it looked very professional too.
