Kerala, Karnataka & Tamil in January

Hello everyone,

Heres the itinery of our next trip planned for one month starting in the new year.

All comments, advice and suggestions would be very welcome, especially regarding recommendations for good budget hotels, any festivals, and any off the beaten path attractions.

It will be myself and my wife (young and fit 40s) , and for the most part we want to spend up to 1,000 rupees per night on accomodation, but are happy to spend extra on a car and driver between the shorter destinations rather than battling with the bus.

We have already been to Periyar (we will be visiting friends there) and Alleppy (we would welcome any suggestions beyond the rice barge). We have also been to Trivandrum, Varkala, Kovalam, and Kaniyakorum, so would rather see newer places.

Here is the rough plan, and we are flexible.


Cherai Beach - 4 days over the new year.
Kannur - 3 days (3rd - 5th Jan)
Mysore - 4 days (6th - 9th Jan)
Ooty - 2 days (10th - 11th Jan)
Kodaikanal - 3 days (12th - 14th Jan)
Madurai - 4 days (15th - 18th Jan)
Perriyar - 3 days (19th - 22nd Jan)
Alleppy area - 2 days (23rd - 24th Jan)
Cochin - 3 days (25th - 27th Jan)

Our plan is to get a good balance of beaches, interesting cites, hill trekking, accessible temples, and backwaters. But as always it is the people and culture that really make the adventure.
