Kerala, 16 days in Jan, honeymoon trip
Hi,
We will be arriving into Trivandrum by train from Goa on the 28th of December and flying from Cochin to Mumbai on the 13th January. Myself and Jane got married a few months ago and are spending 4 weeks in Mumbai, Goa, Kerala. We are both early 30's and have both done a wide vareity of independent travelling and like beaches, jungles, meeting people and walking. Our budget would be around 30$ a day for accom and 50$ a day for everything else, between us. We prefer not to fly if we can help it and trains are good with a minimum of overnight travel. We'd rather quality over quantity and would rather see a few places well than the whole state with 5mins in each place! I've done a bit research, on this site, into places to go and it looks like Trivandrum-Varkala-Cochin-Munnar-Allepey-Kumarakom-Cochin are the places to go. Could advisers suggest an itinerary please - could you also, if you have time, suggest your ideal places to stay in each. Would you recommend spending time in Kumarakom over Allepey (or do you get a boat from Allepey to Kumarakom?). Last question - would you recommend Varkala for New years, if not why not and where would you suggest. Thanks for answers.. Cheers James |

I can say --- Congratulations and welcome to IndiaMike
![]() There are much better (and more local) people at itineraries here than I am, but I would think you could cover those places with less doubling back. Like Trivandrum - Varkala - Allepey - Cochin is like a straight line, and connected by a railway line. Trivandrum to Kochi is only 6 hours, so if you do this step by step you won't be wasting too much time travelling. Kumarakom is just quiet and natural: Allepey is a small town. You could visit Kumarakom by boat from Allapey --- or mabe take a backwaters cruise departing Allepey and arriving Kumarakom. You could do Munnar (I haven't so I don't have a sense of how long it takes) from and returning to Kochi ...Or do it from Kumarakom and return to Kochi; no doubling back and you get to see some more countryside. I think that side of the lake and up into the hills you will have to take cars. |
