I think each spot which is a good spot will be absolutely packed...

damn - after i just got my tickets a few days earlier for varanasi, i learn of this solar eclipse. as such, do you think it's wise to extend my india just for this eclipse? what time is the eclipse? would be keen to look for fellow travellers who will be in varanasi at that time, though i foresee that i will be heading back to delhi immediately.

I noted down some details from a website i found (can't remember which one) ...
Sunrise 5.20am
partial eclipse begins 5.30am
totality 6.24 - 6.27am
partial eclipse 6.27 - 7.27am

hope this helps. I'm also travelling especially from Delhi to see it then jump straight back on a train to Delhi to catch a flight ... a lot of travelling but an experience not to be missed!

I just wanted to thank you all for bringing this solar eclipse to my attention! It'd be a shame to be in Lucknow (so close to Varanasi!) and not even be aware of such an event.

Are there still IMers planning on meeting up in Varanasi? If so, when/where? (I'm contemplating taking a trip out there now...)

Hey everybody. I leave in 2 weeks for Varanasi for the eclipse. Varanasi is on the path of totality, but the best place to view it near Varanasi is a city called Robertsganj, about 90km south, which is on the tru center line. I'm traveling to India alone and planning on taking a bus to Robertsganj in the evening of the 21st. I'd love some company if any one wants to join me.

Aha, I see. Maybe

btw Inasmuch as Omkareshwar has been mentioned above, and I gave some fleeting comments on it; and inasmuch as it's been said here altitude would be a plus; I don't know how it sits on the trajectory, but the island itself (the town as such lies on the banks) is a hill alright. Can't say how high, not very.

So if this would give eclipse watchers an edge I can't say. Being a supremely holy place like it is, I'd expect it to be no less vibrant than Varanasi for the event.

I may see you there as I was looking at travelling to Robertsganj for the eclipcse. I'm torn between being in the central line at Robertganj where it will perhaps be less packed or viewing it in spiritual Varanasi. I couldn't find much information about Robertsganj. Does anyone have any information about what Robertsganj is like, whether it would be a good location to view the eclipse and how long it takes to travel to Robertsganj from Varanasi?

This is a good tool to work out times and path. I think Varanasi would be awesome but Im not sure if I can face the heat right now. Im think Bhopal area could be nice.

? I don't think Bhopal or Varanasi would matter much weather-wise; http://www.indiamike.com/photopost/s.../size/big/cat/ wouldn't seem to suggest so; see also India climate chart .

You're landing just shortly before, right? Better get moving to your destination quickly, and have a train booked in advance.

Robertsganj it is. I've not seen any real info online about that city, but I do know a bus goes through there and I've been told there's at least one hotel. I plan on leaving Varanasi on the 21st to be on time for the early morning eclipse.

Yes, I do intend... Being in Kanpur (UP), I have more than one choices, Varanasi being one for that matter. I am still contemplating and not only that planning and gathering info so as to make sure (if at all I am able to move) as much as possible to be able to witness / photograph it.

There are several issues though, I did talk to some friends to join me, still awaiting their response.

From our place, there are several spots possible within short distances - 200 - 300 Km and if things go as planned (depending on present assignment too) I would hopefully travel to some spot, Varanasi, Robertsganj or others (researching..)

You have a point there. I agree.

Thumbs up

Good idea to check out the Met. Dept. there, Sarkar. They have a .pdf file outlining many details; which, incidentally, lists Pachmarhi as being in the path of totality. Being the popular Madhya Pradesh hill station that it is, maybe a good destination to check out for those seeking some altitude...?

I didn't pore over all the related details there mind, help yourselves.
