January: South! in 2 weeks

Hi,

I'm going to spend 14 days in the Southern India: Tamil Nadu-Kerala-Goa.
My southern route starts in Chennai and ends in Goa, these points are fixed. I've got an approximate itinerary but the problem is there're still too many places for such a short timespan. I've been to Goa previously so for now I'm planning to use it as a semi-transit 2-days stop between night trains from Trivandrum and to Mumbai. So there're 12 days remainding for Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Places that look interesting for me are in Tamil Nadu in Kerala:
Mamallapuram
Poducherry
Ooty
Mudumalai NP
Wayanad NP
Cochin
Backwaters
Varkala
Periyar NP
Trivandrum
so there're 10 places for 12 days, too much I believe. What can be skipped or replaced by something more interesting or more convenient to reach? I'm interested in beautiful nature and quiet and friendly places, and want to avoid (when possible) spending much time in large busy cities. Any suggestions are welcome!

Wayanad can be a bit too of the way in the plan that you have proposed.

Another aspect could be to knock out Varkala / Trivandrum. Do Cochin, backwaters and then move on.

I think with these two changes your plan will be more manageable.

Thank you! But what about Periyar - do you advise to knock it out too or not? If not, where's the most convenient point of transportation there and back, and how much time would it take? And another question - how to get to Cochin from Mudumalai, are there any direct buses, and how much time?

@Edoq,

You may cover the places in the following Way :-

Chennai - Mamallapuram - Pondicherry [ Cab Or Bus]

Get to Villupuram Jn[ 30 kms / Frequent buses] and Board Trivandrum Bound Ananthapuri Express [ Reserve Well in Advance]

Cover Trivandrum , Cochin , Alleppey,Kumarakom

Get Train from Ernakulam Jn [ Cochin] to Coimbatore Jn

From Coimbatore Jn, Get Cab Or Bus [Very frequent buses , 1 Hour Journey] to Mettupalaiyam.

From Mettupalaiyam , Get Toy Train to Ooty [ Reserve Well in Advance]

Ooty Local Sightseeing [ Cab / Shared Van as the case may be]

Get Cab to Mudumalai NP [ 30 kms via Picturesque Kalhatti Ghat Road] Or If you are on Budget , Get Mysore Bound Bus from ooty which will drop you in Mudumalai NP[ 60 kms Via Scenic Gudalur]

From Mudumalai, Get Bus or cab to Mysore , From where you have best connectivity to Bangalore .

Hope this helps & If you are looking for specific info, Please Post !

Cheers

Thank you, it's interesting idea to travel to Ooty from Cochin and not from Chennai. But I don't have time to get to Bangalore - I want to get to Goa finally and I see no direct trains there from Mysore. So maybe I still have to travel from Chennai area to Ooty-Mudumalai and then to Cochin somehow, to catch train to Goa from Cochin or Trivandrum.

Hi,

Bangalore is almost Enroute from Mysore to Goa and just 3 hours from Mysore by bus / Train.

OR else from Mysore, you can board Mangalore bound Express Train[ Train No: 6517 Dep from Mysore 23:45 Arrival at Mangalore: 07:39] and catch a train to Goa from Mangalore !

If you can adjust in a Bus, there are many Volvo A/C Buses between Bangalore and Goa [ Both Government owned KSRTC and Private Travels].

And your idea of traversing other way is also a nice plan.

All the Best
