Jan. 2008 1 Month in India - Itenerary Help

My wife and I (she's 29 I am 33) are planning to return to India for another visit in early January 2008 to Feb. 2008.

We have been in Kerala before for a month so we have some travel background.

Our problem is that we would like to fly into Delhi and see some of northern India and we would also like to travel back to Kerala and visit the people who we stayed with before.

i think we would split it up by staying in Northern India for about 3 weeks and visit Kerala for 1 week.

What I am also wondering is if it would be better to make the itinerary for the whole month a path from north to south. or should we spend time in one place and take a plane to kerala and spend time in one place there.

our budget per person per day is a low to medium budget ($12 - $50 usd)

we would like to visit some toursity type spots but mainly see lots of "off the beaten path" sights. we love to eat delicious indian vegetarian food.

would love to do some train traveling also.

any sugguestions or ideas will greatly help me start creating an itinerary for us. thanks

home.

Try this, 2 weeks North, Fly to Goa,few days Goa.
catch train Goa to Kerala.

Depends where your exit flight is from.

This is my normal holiday pattern: 3 weeks of travel, 1 week of R&R somewhere nice and warm....

Of course it would be easiest to do this on an open jaw flight, like flying into Delhi and back from Cochin or Trivandrum, but I know that this depends very much on which airline you fly.

I did it last year flying in and out of Delhi, going Delhi-Agra-Varanasi-Allahabad-Orcha-Cannanore by train and then flying Khozikode-Mumbai-Delhi. This year my return flight is from Mumbai, which will make things easier. Do consider going south by train, even if it is in one go. In my case it was easier to spend two nights on a train than a complicated train-flight-taxi-combination.

As no one else is chipping in here, this is my itinerary for this year which also ends up in Kerala and could be one you would like to follow:

Delhi-Agra-Delhi-Pushkar-Jodhpur-Jaisalmer-Ranthambore-Bundi-Kerala, all to be done by train with the odd taxi for short distance. 30 days.

so our trip is changing a bit. no longer are we going to kerala. it seems a bit too much right now (travel time and money).

we are choosing stay up north. and we are booking a trip with vegvoyages for the first 16 days. wich starts and delhi and covers most of rajasthan including agra.

our next 16 days we are planning to see uttar pradesh & uttaranchal where we would like to mostly visit varanasi and bodh gaya.

now my questions are:

what are some other great places to visit in uttar pradesh?

also. how much trouble is it to visit nepal from varanassi and return to delhi?

Jon, can't help you too much with that... just one thing: although it is technically not in Uttar Pradesh, Orcha should be easy to incorporate into that trip and I liked it a lot. Of course from there you could also visit Kajuraho if you do not find it too complicated to get to (I did). Orcha is a good place to rest a bit after that tour with vegvoyages.
