Jan 1-26: Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan - CJT?

Background: I lived in Delhi in '94 so I want to spend more time there than normal. This will be my wife's first trip to India. We would like to spend less than US$50/day for the both of us. The itinerary below is not set in stone so we welcome any comments. See questions below!

DEC 31 -JAN 2 - Delhi
JAN 3 - train to Agra
JAN 4 - Agra (Fatehpur Sikri)
JAN 5 - train to Jhansi - Orchha
JAN 6 - Orchha
JAN 7 - train to Bhopal
JAN 8 - day trip to Sanchi
JAN 9 - train to Indore - taxi to Mandu
JAN 10 - Mandu
JAN 11 - Mandu - bus to Indore - night train to
JAN 12-13 - Ahmedabad - night train to
JAN 14-17 - Udaipur - night train to
JAN 18-21 - Jaipur (Amber) - evening train to
JAN 22-26 - Delhi

Some questions:
- Does this seem too rushed? We would like to see places, but also have time to relax.
- Should we try for CJTs or should we book in advance online? Since we are both inexperienced with traveling in India, what would be most stress free?
