Jaipur to Aurangabad for Ajanta/Ellora
Hello there. I'm planning to travel from either Jaipur or Agra to Aurangabad (as a base for Ajanta/Ellora) in July but can't work out the best way to do it.
Ideally I'd travel Delhi-Agra-Jaipur and then head down to Aurangabad from Jaipur but I'm not sure where to change trains from Jaipur in order to get to Aurangabad, but I know you can get a direct train from Agra to Aurangabad or Jalgaon, so I had thought of either travelling: Agra to Jalgaon, bus to Ajanta caves, bus to Aurangabad, Overnight at Aurangabad, day trip to Ellora OR Agra to Aurangabad, stay here for 2 nights & do both Ajanta & Ellora as day trips from here. And then on to Mumbai! Has anyone done a similar trip or have any suggestions as to the best way of doing it? |

The Best option would be,
Agra to Aurangabad ( Aurangabad has many more staying options compared to Jalgaon) Day trips to both Ellora & Ajanta And then on to Mumbai! |

Great, that's kind of what I was swaying towards but it's always nice to have a second opinion! So is it easy enough to do an Ajanta day trip from Aurangabad? Not too rushed I hope?
Thanks for the input, always very much appreciated! ![]() |

I'd second pas2005...yes you can very well do a day trip to Ajanta from Aurangabad and on second day visit Ellora and local places of interest like bibi-ka-maqbara..
However note that Ajanta caves are closed on Mondays & Ellora caves on tuesdays |

You get various options to make a day trip , like buses & taxis. You normally get 4-6 hrs. at Ajanta, which is sufficient . On the Ellora day trip, among other places, you also get to see the Daulatabad Fort , Which is a great place to visit. Also take note of the days on which Ellora & Ajanta are closed. |

The thing is, to get to Aurangebad from Agra (even harder from Jaipur), the quickest way would be to get an overnight train to Bhusaval or Jalgaon, then get a bus to Aurangebad passing Ajanta on the way.
The whole thing may be easier from Aurangebad, you just got to get there first.

Thanks for all the helpful comments,
I've made a decision and booked a train ticket (I love these e-tickets, aren't they incredibly convenient?!) from Agra Cantt to Aurangabad on the ASR NED Express, which departs Agra at 16.35 on the thursday and arrives in Aurangabad at 11.30 on the friday. So then I have the rest of friday to check in to a hotel and recover from the train journey before heading to Ajanta on saturday and ellora on sunday. Then I'm planning to spend another night in Aurangabad before catching a train to mumbai on the monday. Now all I need to do is book a hotel & organise a tour! |
