Hi IMers I am a newcomer, so sorry if you have already discussed this, but...

I am planning a trip for the same period (Feb'08) and duration but mostly in northern India and Nepal. I am going to arrive in Jaipur from Istanbul and then go to Agra and Varanasi. Then Nepal. Can anyone suggest nice places to visit along this route so that I don't travel for, say, 18 hours by bus between Agra and Varanasi?
Thanks everyone!

Agra-Varanasi

First ,there is no need to spend 18 hours travelling on a bus from Agra to Varanasi. There's a daily overnight train which leaves Agra Fort station around 21.00hrs and arrives 12 hrs later in Varanasi.

Should you wish to visit places in between Agra and Varanasi favourite destinations include Kanpur, Jhansi and Orchha, Lucknow, Prayag, Khajuraho.etc.

Make your choice.

Does anyone know whether it is possible to do the opposite around, i.e. going from Varanasi to Agra and then to Jaipur?
Many thanks

I believe trains travel in both directions along most railway lines in India, just like in Europe. Of course, you have to remember that the intermediate stations are encountered in the reverse order.

I am also planning on making a very similar trip early next year beginning around mid to late January. I am planning on flying into New Delhi and eventually ending in Pokhara. I think I am definitely going to stop in Jaipur, Agra, Varanasi, Lumbini and Chitwan N.P before ending in Pokhara.

incitatus, or anyone else, can you tell me a bit about these places: Kanpur, Jhansi and Orchha, Lucknow, Prayag, Khajuraho?

Also, is four weeks too short amount of time to allot to a trip like this, should I allot 8 weeks?

Thanks
