Hi, I posted the other day in Uttar Pradesh forum, but I have since found out that I have from June 15th - July 3rd to travel. This is my plan so far, was wondering if someone could tell me if a) I'm trying to fit too much in b) How much I need to book in advance and c) if the itinerary seems ok or needs changed a bit!

Mon 18th - day in Amritsar/go to border
Tues 19th - Day in Amritsar
Wed 20th -Bus to Chandigarh. Day in Chandigarh
Thurs 21st Train to Kalka and then Shimla
Fri 22nd til Sun 24th - Shimla and around
Mon 25th - Bus to Haridwar
Tues 26th Day in Haridwar
Wed 27th - Bus to Nainital
Thurs 28th - Sat 30th - Nainital

That certainly seems like a very hectic schedule. I think you will end up spending most of your time travelling between destinations rather than at any destination! It also doesnt leave much room for the inevitable delays!

Although I havent travelled much in northern India (yet), so I cant comment on what your destinations are like, I would suggest removing at least one stop, or else you will be too rushed to enjoy anything!

Crikey!!

That's a busy schedule you've got there. If you're going to go for it i'd suggest trying to book your transport well in advance - good luck with http://www.indianrail.gov.in/ .

Personally, I'd allow 2-3 days in most places, if you want to move on you can but it will give you time to absorb a bit of local life.

Hoping not to sound condesending, the best advice I can give is that India is'nt the UK and things work...'differently' negotiating the procurement of a train ticket can be a lot of fun if you've got time on your hands but if your in a rush i guess it could be awfully stressful.

shanti, shanti!

Are you interested in overnight trains?

Available for.....

This first one sounds crazy, but I'd be tempted.....Sultanpur is 100 kms from Allahabad, connected by a direct road, journey time about 3 hours. (Allahabad-Agra daytime trains take 7 hours)

Train 4863 Sultanpur 21:03 Agra Fort 06:05

An alternative....

Train 2401 Allahabad 00:52 Tundla 06:32, Tundla is 24kms from Agra.

Train 8237 Agra Cant 16:10 Amritsar 08:55

Train 4120 Haridwar 00:05 Kathgodam 07:15
(Kathgodam is about an hour from Nainital)

Train 5014 Kathgodam 20:40 Delhi S. Rohilla 05:10

If you re-write your Itinerary with a few overnight trains it doesn't seem so tight.

She is generally allowing a full day for journey so it should be alright.
Shimla-Haridwar Bus journey is tiring.
You will have to run around but yess , by the end of it you will be able to tick a lot of items in your to-do list (thats how travel is taken by most of us )

Trying to fit too much in

I earlier posted a thread-FIRST TIME TRAVEL OVERSEAS.

I planned to see almost 13 cities/places in abt 20days. Almost everyone thought I was mad.

Well I was planning to take the train at night and visit most places during the day. I am still not sure whether I need more that 1 day in certain places like allahabad.

But I have already cut the no. of places down. I tried to visit north and some south cities in 1 visit.

I guess its too tiring and hectic.

Cut down on some travel and maybe fly.

This is from an earlier post regarding train Vs plane.

I beleive the true value of an overnight train on a short Itinerary it the time saved.

You have to sleep, either in a hotel or a train but you still have lost all those hours you're sleeping, when you then consider the time it takes to get to the airport, check-in, then eventually board the plane, the overall saved time when flying is minimal when compared to an overnight train.

Train 2562 departs New Delhi daily at 20:40 and gets to Varanasi Jn at 08:45.

So you'd leave your hotel in Paharganj just before 8pm, and you'd get to your hotel in Varanasi by 9:30 in the morning.

OK, you'd be losing a few evening hours in Delhi, but lets assume there is a plane that gets to Varanasi airport by 8 in the morning, (to get you to the hotel by 9:30), the plane would have to depart Delhi airport by 7am, you'd have to be at the airport before 6, so leave your Delhi hotel by 5, you'd still lose the evening hours.
